For me the length was fine- it really felt like the guy had played through a whole game, and the growing tension kept me interested.

Hi, /v/. The only Zelda game I played is The Legend of Zelda on NES. Didn't really enjoy it as a kid, I liked Super Mario Bros more. Can I play Breath of the Wild without playing any other Zelda games?

Zelda doesn't follow any kind of continuity you need to know about, so yeah, you can play any of them in any order. I haven't played BotW myself though, so I can't personally recommend it.
