They weren't forced into anything. It's their own fault for fucking up their schedule and not predicting that casuals love useless game-modes like arcade.

It sold less for a lot of reasons, one of them being unfinished, but it is dumb to have expected it to even touch SF4 vanilla in sales, they should have known this. vanilla sf4 sales are the product of coming out at a perfect time. It was the advent of online fighting games and it was a return to a far more tradition Street Fighter after being so long departed thanks to the 3 series.

Hillariously, vanilla 4 had a lot of the same problems as SFV does. It had the 7-8 frames of input lag (which got a pass because, like I said, it was a different time and the advent of online and the new scene), it had absurdly high gorilla damage and every time you got knocked down by anything you had to guess (which is actually less of a problem in SFV).

Capcom just don't understand that the majority of initial sales come from retarded casuals who want to do story and arcade modes, the people who play competitively are going to buy it regardless. The real problem is how they've balanced the game to be a spectator game over being a fun competitive game to actually play.

Sakurai himself said that he had nothing against people using those mechanics, he even said that he already knew about them when they shipped Melee, but it created a divide in the playerbase that he felt was unnecessary for a PARTY game.

He wanted more people to be able to play the game with others without having to put in a large amount of time to learn the more complex mechanics. So that's why he removed them. How the ''pros'' feel about that is completely irrelevant since every smash game has sold better and better with each instalment, those mechanics had no bearing on the games overall success/popularity.

There's no reason to support the melee community at all. It's too much of a headache.

Throwing money into the prizepool is worthless as that does nothing for Nintendo. Like, literally nothing at all. It makes them no money. The same reason they don't overtly support it, because they get no money from it. People buy secondhand controllers or maybe drop 10 bux on that great dongle that lets you use GCN controllers on the PC so they can play 20XX OR they buy a secondhand Wii and a secondhand copy of melee, both of which get them no money.

There's no reason to think of making an updated rerelease like a "Melee 2" or a "Melee HD" because nobody would play it. The Melee community is autistic as hell and any minor change would be reason enough to not play the game. Hell, even Armada has said that if Nintendo makes any changes for a Melee HD he just won't play it. By making a Melee HD or a Melee 2, all they'll do is split the community.

The Melee community holds a grudge towards Nintendo for Project M, and those people are retarded assholes who know nothing of IP law.

This leaves the final option for Nintendo to be an exact 1-1 copy of Melee to put on the Switch as well as create controllers and adaptors for the Switch. A 1-1 copy of Melee would be an incredibly niche product, and if it were to come out, it'd be with the Gamecube Virtual Console, which is still in development.

So yeah, waiting is the optimal option. The best thing for Melee to do right now is to try and not have what happened to other Esports. Do you know why Marvel 3 died? Why Starcraft died? Because they were so fucking boring. Chris G singlehandedly killed Marvel with his lameass strategy that was absolutely awful to watch, same with people who degenerated the game into ToDs. If it's not fun to watch, you don't get more people into the game, viewers leave for greener pastures and the game dies. Hbox and Armada's camping playstyle is a bigger threat to Melee than Nintendo ever will be.

Want to know the real reason that esports will die? The communities for them being awful. Veteran players are generally unwelcoming to new players since the "heh, you'll probably drop it in a week anyway" line of thought and the "this is secret tech, I'm saving that shit for nationals" effect leads to high amounts of pointless strife. Do you know why Korea prodcues such good players in the games played professionally there like Starcraft, League of Legends, and Tekken? Because they act like professionals. They treat it like a real business. They foster new players as long as they're willing to learn, and once you're on a team, you have access to 24/7 practice partners. Many top players live together so they can practice at all times of day. There were Starcraft houses just so guys could improve with their teammates at all times. Now here's the kicker: You don't get paid unless you're already at a high level in the company. Why would you want to stay there? Regarding ArcSys, the people that play them are generally crazy, awful people. Zidane is incredibly anti-social outside of his small circlejerk with Biscuits and has even stated that he hates the GG fanbase (for good reason, of course). When you mention a flaw of their game, they try to defend it or downplay it. (literally no excuse for danger time to exist). Any basketball fan would be thrilled to get a chance to meet Michael Jordan, because he made history in the sport. Daigo is still active and I think that's commendable, even if he's not one of the best in the world at this point. The actual visuals are a big part of it, yes (many stages are either busy or very dark, which led to people purposely choosing dark costumes on them just to make ti harder to see) but on the PS3, some stages can make the game drop down to 50 frames or even less.

VF3 had the "Korean step" technique, but Yu Suzuki thought it looked stupid and unnatural (read as: He was upset that Koreans won the Virtua Fighter 3 international cup), so he removed it in 4. This angered the Koreans so much, they all started playing Tekken becuase you could still do all sorts of retarded movement cancels and wavedashes in it. Now Harada-san is rolling in Korean money while Yu Suzuki has none at all and VF is absolutely dead outside of Japan. Tekken tried removing Korean backdashes once in Tekken 4, and of course, no one likes that one.
