>Literally no game
>Just Unreal Engine Assets
>Gameplay consist of 1 wizard walking around UE assets
>2.7 MILLIONS DOLLARS!!!!

Explain this shit. EXPLAIN! There is literally nothing. It's fucking nothing, and yet... 2.7 million. What in the actual fuck?
>>
>kickstarting an MMO

People really will back anything won't they? Is there any chance this WON'T crash and burn?

I like the weather effects.

Also people are desperate for a good mmo

There is literally no gameplay. Anon, me and you could throw some UE assets into an oven, bake it, then make a ton of money. Like, people are so fucking retarded.

If you think that's bad, go look at Star Citizen and how much money they've scammed off of people for over half a decade, again, only with tech demos to show for it.

How does $151,295,048 strike you?
>>
>>379250785
>more than 300$ per backer
I call bullshit on that.

2.7M is nothing in game development

27M is nothing in MMO development

270M maybe
>>
>>379250809
The real sad part is not even the idiots who spend thousands of dollars for virtual ships in a game that will likely never exist.

It's that they defend it and will likely do it again whenever the next scam comes along. That's why devs keep doing this shit and why games are going to shit. Devs don't have to change because people keep throwing money at them.

3m in crowdfunding is massive, regardless of the scope of your game.

This isn't a publisher or a legal agreement. The dudes are able to divide the money however they please, release (or not) the game whenever and however they please.

Crowdfunding is intrinsically shit and only works 5% of the time. Developers need deadlines, supervisors and rules, for as much shit as /v/ gives publishers when games come out rushed or buggy.
>>
>>379250904
You underestimate the stupidity of gamers, and MMO players especially.
>>
>>379250261
star citizen
>>
>>379251075
What do you think 3m gets you, it is definitely not enough to make a 3D game let alone an MMO
>>
>>379250916
If it's this fucking easy to get rich, why hasn't /v/ made a game yet. How could we lose, the AoC guy used to scam people with his jungle juice and now he scamming again.
>>
>>379250261
Because it has shiny graphics
This IS the ps4 generation
>>
>>379251173
because /v/ largely can't code, write or model, for the most part.

And /v/ has made a game before.
>>
>>379251296
Dude. They're entire game is just UNREAL ENGINE ASSETS AND THEY MADE OVER 3 MILLION DOLLARS NOW!!!!! There is no need to learn or engage any amount of time into those tools. We can make money without them.
>>
>>379250809
>How does $151,295,048 strike you?
How did they make this much money and the game is still incomplete?
>>
>>379251562
I directly worked on a game that's made over 1b USD
I got maybe 5k extra on my bonus
Game dev sucks
>>
>>379251624
By releasing more funding tiers constantly and selling virtual ships for the finished game.

It's both how they made so much money and why the game is nowhere near being finished, since they're working on more ships, shitty demo gamemodes and other garbage. They're milking people so blatantly and ruthlessly, it's honestly sad to watch.
>>
>>379251678
Which is why competent software programmers don't stay in game development and move on to other areas of the field. They tend to be more code monkey friendly in terms of hours and pay.
>>
>>379250345
Funny enough when there was finally a good MMO up on kickstart (Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen) it was not funded.
They're still making the game tho,but will obviously not be able to make it as good due to limited budget.
>>
>>379252178
>https://youtu.be/xYVDrfR6ZsM
>this looks good
>>
>>379251868
But how did the game not go gold? With 150mil that game should have been finished. That's insane.
>>
>>379252068
I doubt there's anywhere better to work, everywhere else wouldn't even give a bonus
I should just write malware
>>
>>379252304
The game is still in development.
And the game audience is not catered around the big mass, but around a tight knit community of people that enjoy oldschool more hardcore MMO's, you know the thing that EVERYONE always says they want but in reality does not want it.
>>
>>379252354
Not him but why would you finish the game when you get more money this way? It's a business model in itself.
>>
>>379252710
No one uses their brains. Holy shit.
>>
>>379250916
Didn't WoW take 60 million back in 2000 to make?
>>
>>379251624
Most of the money for the actual game goes to celebrities doing voice acting. And also expansive coffee machines.

Does anyone have the picture with the guy posting with that coffee machine?
>>
>>379252896
WoW was rebooted at least once. Plus you need to take into account the marketing, it's blizzard after all.
>>
>>379252826
It's intentional, too. I'd wager most of their resources are assigned to keep putting that stuff out instead of working on the game.

But as was said earlier before... Gamers tend to be both stupid, delusional, and wealthy. Try promising a super movie or book and see how well that gets funded. It's gamers specifically that are dumb enough to try this on.
>>
That's really not a lot of money when it comes to modern games, and especially if it's an MMO

>Although BioWare has not disclosed development costs, industry leaders and financial analysts have estimated it to be between $150 million and $200 million or more, making it, at the time, the most expensive video game made, though if marketing costs are included, it is eclipsed by Grand Theft Auto V, with an estimated ...

Why get people to buy an unfinished game when you can sell an unfinished idea for an game?
>>
>>379253242
To expand on this, I also agree with OP.

2.7 mill is not enough for a proper MMO, as they are some of the most expensive shit to make.
The kickstarter is hopefully just to get some more investors/publishers interested, but I wouldn't have high hopes for this.
>>
>>379253887
pretty sure the guy in charge is rich and putting in a lot of money
>>
>>379251075
>for as much shit as /v/ gives publishers when games come out rushed or buggy.
They overstress deadlines and force omission of critical gameplay elements for the sake of sales while installing largely incompetent management to manhandle thousand man teams into coding, designing and mapping games and when the development cycle reaches critical mass they lay off everyone leaving thousands of tiny fragments of missing code, holes in maps, and poor design choices and then idiots buy the shit up. And you're telling me we need more management in development?

The problem is that the developers have issues working from the ground up in most cases and start working the game features all across the board while never wholly committing to the base features so not only do you get a shitty EA title, but you get a shitty EA title that literally goes nowhere because it's starved at the roots. Then they have to play catch up with the whole spectrum of fuck-ups they've created along the way and get burnt out in the attempt.

Management doesn't solve this, the only thing that solves this is a continued effort to develop a meaningful architecture in which a successful modern game can be developed with a small team of self-regulating people. Game development doesn't work on the large scale, like ever. See literally every AAA released in the last decade for evidence. Working on everything at once as any developer, big or small, doesn't work.

Got a bit interested, searched around a bit.

Never heard of this before today, but seems fishy.

>Steven Sharif, the owner/CEO made his money from a fucking pyramid scheme company.
>Also married to the CFO
>Lays out a development cost of about 30 mil. (Still not great for a MMO).
>Had to pull a referral scheme from the Kickstarter as it was against their rules. Defended afterwards that it was not a pyramid scheme.

Why people throw money at shitty kickstarters I will never understand.
>>
>>379254972
Common sense is in short supply these days. Very short.
>>
>>379254972

>>379250261
Lets not forget how barren their development team

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-baoW2-B-A Looks like less than 20 people working on the mmo.

kek 20 people trying to create a large scale mmo that gonna support hundreds of players in 1 area gl

It's not a kind of game amateurs can do.

in any case you've nothing to lose.

I'd like to chime in on this and also focus on how game companies mostly don't keep their inhouse staff when the game is done, there's also the outsourcing that just gives sub-par assets.
All of this process can go wrong due to lack of communication or mismanagement.
A good example of a company done right (Animation company because its the only good example i currently have) is Ufotable, they can make pretty looking animation by keeping and evolving their inhouse staff instead of relying on freelances and outsources.
