Funny, as a kid the first time I found this I thought he really did curse me and it meant I only had half as much magic so I quit my game and didn't go back to the cave til years later.

Kholdstare requires a full bar of magic to break his ice shield with the fire rod but he is not a threat while you're doing it. You can also use Bombos to break it instantly and keep magic left over to fight Kholdstare with the rod in addition to your sword.

Vitreous requires no magic to beat

Trinexx actually only really requires you to hit the heads twice with the fire and ice rod each while hitting them with tempered sword. You can hit the element heads once and kill them with the gold sword very easily. You have way more magic than you need on Trinexx and you get a refill right before him.

tl;dr git fucking gud, ALTTP isn't unfair, you can very easily beat the game with vanilla magic and no potions

It's amazing how they managed to fit such a dense adventure game into such a small game world. ALTTP has so much charm and stuff to explore, it's the perfect example of world design.
