Even the 1st Pokemon's gen that everybody praise so much was a joke, a poorly developed game because if you take just the time to compare it to another rpg like Link's Awakening released many years before also on GB you can see how shitty graphics or even mobility of your characters were. Even sounds and musics were inferior.

In fact most casual like to tell us how good Pokemon was because that the only popular game they've played that felt like an old retro game that they couldn't have known before. They want to be part of the cool kids but they are born to late and they know it.
The fact is that this game was poorly made. Only good thing to tell of it was how that game's world felt huge.

In retrospect it is pretty bad when comparing it to other games at the time. However, it wasn't bad enough that people dropped it and forgot it. Hell, even the sequels managed the same achievements for the most part. Bad games can be memorable because they're fun. Like it not, Pokemon has managed to keep itself consistently on top in the long run when challenged by various rivals over the years. It has to be doing something right besides advertising.
I mean shit, Digimon almost kicked its ass international before Bandai starting going full retard and shitting out bad game after bad game.
