Well, I havent played vanilla in forever so this might not be of much help but...
Try to abuse the terrain, there's plenty of enemies that cant jump up ledges so it's pretty easy to cheese them. Wide open spaces are usually a bad idea, you want lots of ledges and ladders to put distance between enemies and you. Always rush for the teleporter you'll never catch up if you try to farm for items. Drones are a pretty good bet to invest in since they'll let you kite enemies for an eternity and actually do good enough DPS in vanilla to kill shit in a reasonable amount of time.
After a while you should start to get the hang of things and get used to enemy's behavior. Like wisps will always attack after a certain period of time and same with the spiders, you can jump over a ton of stuff so getting the timing done will definitely help. Also learning the map and which areas are easier to cheese enemies in.

Also for this glass mode what's the "safest" class to play with /v/ rules? I figured sniper since I can chill back far away but I die like nonstop. I want to git gud but playing the game normally is too easy, I try practicing /v/ rules in solo player and have never made it past stage 1 yet
