Call of Chernobyl, wouldn't recommend any mods besides maybe bug fixes. I did my first playthrough completely vanilla and didn't have any issues. Just make sure to look up the commands to disable mouse acceleration.

Shadow of Chernobyl with mods or call of pripyat

It's just a freeplay mod made of bits of the main games, I don't see how it would appeal to anyone who isn't already familiar with the series.

Start with Shadow of Chernobyl, Skip Clear Sky and go straight to Call of Pripyat, only check out Clear Sky if you really liked the SoC and CoP.

Probably go vanilla, OR get some light mods that fix bugs and make graphics slightly better. Don't get the 'Complete' mods. They normie-fy the games.
