5 is the last game Kaga worked on. That's not necessarily a good or bad thing, but there's a distinct tonal shift afterwards toward childishness with the bright colors and support focus of Elibe.

Elibe itself is sort of a gray area, since it's fundamentally similar to the Shadow Dragon style (and in many ways a blatant ripoff of it), and since 7's the first game most people in the west played a lot of people like to count it because it makes them feel better about themselves. You could argue either way, really.

Magvel and Tellius are extreme fringe cases. You could argue that the former is a successor to Gaiden and that the latter is relatively safe mechanically, but they're still a bit off. 8 and 9 are extremely easy, and Tellius in particular feels more like a bad VN than a strategy game since in spite of the mission diversity you don't really get interesting maps until like halfway through 10 and most of RD's "challenge" just comes down to the Dawn Brigade being absolute shit. I wouldn't personally count them but the fanbase has an incredible boner for Ike and might well count them just because he's in it.

Shadow Dragon is pretty much just FE1. If we're counting the preceding games it definitely counts, but otherwise whatever. New Mystery, on the other hand, is definitely on the other side. It introduces an avatar system, basic support/waifu features, and an overall much more positive "you can save almost everyone <3" philosophy wherein the deaths of people like Michalis and the Wolfguard are entirely preventable. Pretty much everything introduced in Awakening is a logical extension of mechanics in New Mystery, and ditto for Fates with respect to Awakening.

tldr 5 is the soft cutoff, with a gradual fadeout from there that's mostly gone after 7 and totally gone after 11. That's not to say games after 5 aren't good or anything, but there's a palpably different direction afterward from strategy to characters.
