It's cool that at least the main characters have more consistent faces in the HD remake.

In the original the game kept switching to these really simple almost 2D faces when a character wasn't supposed to be emoting that much and it was jarring as fuck when replaying the game on emulator because low resolution of ps2 didn't cover that shit up anymore once rendered at higher resolutions.

It's hard to recommend this game. This game was like a struggle between the forces of good and evil in SqEnix. On one hand, you can see flashes of brilliance in this game. You see the near-resurrection of the fantasy this series was known for. On the other hand, you see Jpop faggotry and the doom of the series creeping its way into the game.

It also gets extremely boring and light on story in the second half of the game so it's hard to play. I want to recommend it, I do, but you might end up just as hurt as I was and never play another FF game again.

Most are unconnected, but they all take place within the same.. multiverse? With each universe separated by a thing called The Void. For instance, the character Gilgamesh appears throughout most of the series, and SE pretty much confirmed he's the same dude in every game, traveling between worlds hunting weapons.

All in all though they're mostly all separate. Play Vagrant Story and FFT if you want more set in the same world as FF12, just far in the future.

There's literally no justification for calling Vaan and Penelo the main characters though. In fact, the game moves away from their perspective entirely and into Ashe's as things progress. You frequently observe other characters, including Vaan and Penelo, from her perspective, and are indulge in private conversations between her and other characters that Vaan and Penelo aren't present for.

Ashe is the main character in every measurable way. Vaan isn't even the first character you play as, Reks is, so HE must be the main character by that metric. You're forced to play as Vaan in towns, but that's because there are story reasons for the other characters to not show their faces, meaning bitch boi gets to do the shopping while they chill.

Vaan is considered the main character because without him, the story would never have moved the way it did. His role is really minor overall but it's extremely important for everybody else in order for them to better themselves.
He helps Ashe get over her depression, gives Basch hope and forgiveness about Reks, convinces Balthier that he's worth a shit, and reminds Fran that she made the right choice in leaving the wood (arguably I don't remember too much about their relation). Penelo is kind of there to even out the cast but also gives Vaan more motivation I guess.
It's similar to how FFX works with both Tidus and Yuna being the main characters: Without Tidus, the cycle wouldn't have ended, but without Yuna, there'd be no story to tell at all.
