One of the few games that I would like to play again for the first time.
Lately I've been building elaborate designs using cables and other advanced stuff, but what I would really like is to go back to basics and enjoy it again.

Maybe playing with a friend who's going in blind would be nice. I'd help him build his own designs and just follow him around when exploring, pretending I don't know any better.

Anyone else feel like there's a major disconnect between the quality of the earlier bosses and the later ones?

I don't know if it's only because by the time you face them you have far less gameplay options open to you than later on, but the Eye of Cthulhu and Skeletron [both Normal and Prime] feel like they belong on a different game than everything after Sleletron Prime with how simple they are

Agreed. 2d = lazy devs looking for a quick cashgrab considering it was the biggest "sandbox survival procedural generation" game after minecraft.

It was timing, nothing more. So glad I pirated it for all of my <18 hours played. Not even with friends was it worth.

I like it, but I somehow put more hours into starbound before it was completely trashed ... I'm probably just a sucker for sci-fi themes.

The updates which include a lot of the later bosses were made much later on in the game's lifetime, and there's huge gaps of time between major updates, the game started off as a kinda mediocre passion project and has a few actually competent programmers working on it now.

I'm thinking of replaying it again with some mods installed. So far I got thorium, Calamity and Spirit mod all lined up.

I wanted to get Tremor too, but I was warned against it because of bad spritework and terrible late game balance.
