Eh, the game literally hampers game mechanics for the sake of attacks looking whacky and overthetop. Shitty responsiveness, GCD that removes room for depth, content that feels at this point far watered down compared to WoW. Sure the game's got all this nifty vanity looking stuff, but none of it matters when the game plays like ass.

I can't speak for the game's current state, I played it when heavensward released.

The first playthrough and leveling experience was great to me - it's basically its own game. Expect hours upon hours of going through story though. The reason I quit was because the endgame was running the same two dungeons over and over again for tokens to buy gear good enough to run a single raid instance of 4 bosses with no trash mobs, and a few max level raid fights. There simply wasn't enough variety for me and I quit.

I absolutely loved the class design in this game - far superior to WoW's in my opinion.

I'm playing under the trial. Got 2 characters at 35, which is the trial level. Leveling some crafting and gathering before buying the full game. It's been pretty fun, especially now that the trial has no time limit. No reason no to try it I guess.

There are still a handful that at least attempt to innovate, and some that value how the game plays. XIV unfortunately doesn't do either. All style over substance

MMOs have a lot of potential but they are also huge capital risks and require a very dedicated team (not hiring temp interns like most AAA studios do). It also doesn't help that the genre requires specific skillsets which are rare to find in the industry, especially in the case of FFXIVs dev team where they must not only have MMO expertise (there's hardly any MMOs available in Japan anyways) and they can also speak Japanese fluently and work grueling schedules (Heavensward team worked with no breaks or time off for almost a year)
