Ground Zeroes is what all of MGSV should have been; a linear experience but with well designed maps that promoted multiple methods of infiltration.

GZ was also much better about laying weapons and items about to promote OSP, but that could only be done if TPP wasn't open world.

MGS2 and MGS3 Are equally good in terms of story. MGS4 obviously has a dumb story, but I also don't get how people are so into MGS1.
I haven't played MGS4 because I don't own a PS3, but it looks as if the gameplay is seriously fun. MGS3 is also cool in that the gameplay follows the story very naturally in terms of how things are opened up and the way you have to use different kinds of thinking with the same tools for different circumstances (FD Pill, Certain guns becoming more/less important in boss fights) MGSV:GZ takes the cake for 100% fluid gameplay, before TPP trashed it with dumb toys and nice icing like customization but a completely unchanging core gameplay experience (go here, kill/extract, story does nothing to this over the entire game. No abilities given or removed of any consequnce) - the exact opposite of MGS3.
Best character is Otacon just because I enjoy the opening of MGS2 so much The sorrow and the Colonel / Zero are also fun backing characters. Worst character is Naomi or Raiden in MGS4, although I don't mind playing as him in MGS2.
Best song is the old snake theme, along with snake eater although none of the ambient music in 3 really stands out. On the contrary ambient music in 2 is fantastic. Worst song is sins of the father.

Best snake is Solidus, worst snake is BB. He comes off as way too autistic in 3 and then you get no time for him to speak his mind in any of the following games.

normal. the game's difficulty is pretty fucked up frankly, the curve is all over the place and actually starts very hard.

Parts of the game are straight up impossible without consumables, even on normal (staircases part with the gun turrets and endless enemies, unless you're pooping chaff grenades good fucking luck)

Researching items makes no sense in a mainline MGS game - It's ok in MGS4 because they're mostly superfluous and you get them instantaneously - its just another fun part of the gameplay. In TPP it's like 50% of the gameplay. Expand the base boss! Why? Uh so you can do a bunch of boring things that just expand your base further and you can also unlock new stuff! Why would I want new stuff? Well because then it's easier to expand your base! Or you do the missions but with more steps cut out because the better guns just circumvent gameplay (Lvl 5 snipers one shot through helmets and body armour, Fulton cannon, decoys, d-dog, quiet .etc) There was a whole bunch of unused stuff. They never let you have fun with tanks, for example.

The correct approach would be like any other MGS game but with the organisation of GZ - split the game in to a dozen or so large areas to suit the story and have things available to pick up at well balanced points which make sense, rewarding the player for going out of their way to find them.

Exploring the environment in TPP rewards you with nothing. There's always 1 alternate route into a base but you can clearly see it just from the map screen.

MGS4's problem was Drebin's store. It was really retarded that you could just buy ammo and new weapons at any time.

MGS4 was better about how weapons and items were placed around but the store ruined emphasis on OSP. MGSV handled it better when it came to restocking however, the Fulton system was a vast improvement but the researching and grind for new weapons shit on it as well.

When you held them up or knocked them out they would drop their primary weapon (often a rifle). Then if you wanted to get their secondary (a sidearm/pistol), you'd have to bait them into attacking you, causing them to pull out their pistol, and then knock them out so that they drop that as well. This was also because 8 years had passed since MG2 released (1990) and MGS1 came out (1998), and the MSX games were exclusive to Japan until 2004 when Snake Eater released. MGS1 was sort of a reboot of the series and a 3D remake of MG2, and since it became so popular in the West on the PS1, MG1 and MG2 were largely retconned.

The out-of-universe reasoning is obviously that a lot of plot stuff from MG2 wound up being reused in a slightly different coat of paint for Solid 1. Holly doesn't come up again because she was essentially just Meryl v0.9
