Discord has some privacy concerns, but outside of that it's a pretty easy to use program.
I use it all the time to talk to friends. Randoms in servers, not so much.

Easy to organize voice communication. Very quick to link and integrated with web browser, so no download required.

I'm on a lot of porn, social, and gaming servers. I mostly just use it for WoW raiding.

Also, it's on mobile, so you can stay social while you're outside i never go outside

I've considered hopping onto some public discord channels tailored to my interests as a more modern alternative to IRC, but I'm not big into physically talking. Do most people use Discord as a plain chat client or are you expected to join the voice channel?

The voice chat needs to be actively keep being used so people join in. Lots of discord servers with not so active voice chats and busy chatrooms because the vc isn't being actively used by a few commoners.

It is the best voip service that is free and browser based. Teamspeak is lower resource and it opens faster but inviting to discord is much easier due to it being browser based. It has everything the other services has but much more and is completely free. Integration with games is nice and it has other fluff that only silly men care about like Twitch integration. They aren't monetizing it because they don't know how they want to monetize it yet, there are no limitations as of now.
