Asked last thread but didn't get any replies.

Been looking into some jrpgs and was wondering if I can get some quick thoughts.
>SMT: Soul Hackers (3ds)
>Metal Saga (ps2)
>Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (ps2)
I'm mostly after soul hackers as I haven't completed a smt game and the cyber punk setting seems cool.

I'm looking for SRPGs. Here's a bunch of games on my backlog, which are good and which are not? Feel free to recommend other games as well.

dark wizard
brigandine
arc the lad
vandal hearts
faselei!
gungnir
stella deus
monstania
energy breaker
stella glow
rondo of swords
project x zone
soul nomad
phantom brave
feda
vantage master
natural doctrine
nep noire

X zone is mostly a fan service game, gameplay is said to be pretty repetetive. I have heard the sequel is better though.

A good place to start if you've played none of those games. Vandal Hearts is entry-level fare as well.

They're all great games
Soul Hackers has possibly my favorite setting in SMT together with SJ, gameplay is standard old SMT, nothing too bad, music is amazing and so is monster design.
Metal Saga is part of the Metal Max series which I personally love, it's basically an open world nonlinear JRPG with tanks and a heavy Mad Max influence, it's pretty much Mad Max: The JRPG series, if you like open world and exploration coupled with maintaing your vehicles you'll drop 200 hours on it easily.
Dragon Quarter is a misunderstood game, it's really good but not what people expect from BoF since it becomes a kind of survival Roguelike, if you can get into it it's possibly the best BoF mechanically speaking.
>>379180652
The only one I'd skip is Nep, because I don't like nepshit, Arc trilogy is great if you want something with more narrative focus, it's pretty great, Vantage Master is more of a complex board game than a true SRPG, but you'll see once you play it, possibly my favorite Falcom RPG besides Brandish.
>>379181212
Itoken is Itoken, Scarlet Grace's battle themes are all amazing too.

Thanks for the info. I loved metal max returns and was bummed to hear a lot of the series isn't translated. I heard about metal saga and thought it was worth a look. With DQ I loved III and IV and honestly the timer mechanic seems pretty interesting along with the apoctlyptic setting look great.

The PSP Vantage Master is the same as the PC version but with different Cameo battles, so no Popful Mail or Brandish characters to fight, iirc they've been swapped for TiTS characters but it's been a long time since I played it so I might be wrong, it's either TiTS or other Kiseki characters that weren't in the original Vantage Master either.

The PC version is free though, you can get it in english on Falcom's website too, the PSP version is JP only, and so is the second Vantage Master.
Get the PC version and see if you can get into it though, it's a fairly unusual game, kind of vaguely reminiscent of Culdcept in a way.
>>379182345
If you liked Returns you'll love Saga since it's Returns Turbo II Arcade Deluxe edition&Knuckles, I still prefer the DS games but it's a game you must play if you like Metal Max.
>>
>>379182716

>>
>>379182174
The first game was Vantage Master. Then right after that they released a "sequel" (pretty much just an updated version) called V2. V2 had an English language version release called Vantage Master Online. That's what I played, the English VMO version of V2, it's what most English players have played. Then there was another sequel called Vantage Master Japan which I know little about. Then VM was remastered for PSP and yes, it was called Vantage Master Portable, which then also got a PC port.

If you're playing V2, VMO, or VMP, you're fine.

Ahhh, console video games (or vidcons as I call them), the ultimate medium of expression, able to convey any emotion ranging from hatred to love, loyalty to fear, all in front of our eyes. Ah, and with lovingly crafted art, music, and the ability to control the action, vidcons are the ultimate combination of the high arts. While I tend to play the stoic, I will be the first to admit that vidcons have driven me to cry, to scream and shout, to feel actual hate; such is the power of this force beyond our wildest reckoning. And here I am, before you, to tempt your tongues with the taint of such a tantalizing topic. And the Japanese, the true geniuses behind the world of video games. Pah, I throw my scorn upon such incompetents of the West who would mock the true art of the Japanese with 'games' such as Baldur's Gate and Madden. Perhaps it is that the West is not as intelligent as the East, but this is a matter for another day. Japan has given us such masterpieces as the Final Fantasy series, Star Ocean, Wild Arms, and of course, Arc the Lad. Yes, some of the finest vidcons in the world were created by Japanese. I come to you today to ask you in all earnesty, what is your favorite vidcon? I will reveal mine after the grand debate has illustriously begun, but not before the first poster falls victim to my plot of discussion.

FF1 and 2, DQ1 and 2, the Game Boy SaGa ("Final Fantasy") games, and various turn-based roguelikes. The FF series really took a nosedive after the Famicom era was over, so anything after that can't hold my interest. I really didn't even care for FF3 for that matter.

As for individual games, there's a shit-ton of stuff I play: Natsume's Dungeon Magic, the NES ports of Bard's Tale and Pool of Radiance, Miracle Warriors, the NES ports of Ultima 3 and 4... Not really sure how many of those count, since they were originally conceived by Western devs. Just their respective console ports were handled by JP studios.

>play any recently
No. Been busy clearing random things from my backlog. Just now finished Twilight Princess for GC.

>anything you looking forward to
No. I don't own any current generations of hardware and don't want to. I especially don't care for remakes, so-called "enhanced" ports or other soulless cash-ins.

Suikoden 2 is the shit. I really like how it isn't pretentious like so many JRPGs from the time were. Not to mention it also didn't chase 3D and try to be FF7. In fact, modern elements it did incorporate like the CG cinematics are easily the worst parts that have aged the worst.

I'm okay with JRPGs as long as they don't have random encounters. This thing should be eternally forbidden. It's even strange that FF kept this until XII.

>>379184568
It's one of my favourite games but it's not for everyone. The story is only a couple notches above the typical JRPG, as it has some "ancient evil" type stuff, but the characters are very memorable and the story focuses more on kingdoms and politics than the silly stuff. It's nice how you can influence several characters' fate depending on your actions. I also like the 'vacation' periods between combat, it's a nice way to pace the game and to develop characters. Eventually your 'base' becomes one of the most comfy places in vidya.
Unfortunately the game starts pretty slowly.

The best part of Growlanser IV is the gameplay. You move across the battlefield and fight enemies. After each attack (or before each spell) you undergo a cool down period until you can act again, like a turn based JRPG. But moving across the map is also tied to time, you can input orders and reassign orders any time while moving so the gameplay feels very fluid. Furthermore, there is a materia-like system that both teaches skills and provides certain bonuses for having them equipped. There's a lot of customization you can do with this system and this is very important because of the battles. Rather than simple 'kill the enemy' like in most games, almost every map requires a different strategy depending on the layout of the battlefield and any side objectives of the map. Sometimes you'll want to focus on magic, sometimes, you'll need to delay an enemy from escaping, sometimes you need to protect allied units, sometimes you need to kill the enemy but even then you want to take advantage of the battlefield in order to do so.

IV is a good place to start. Also note that there's an "undub" patch available (voices were removed in the western release, this just puts them back in).

There's no grinding necessary. Sometimes you encounter enemies on the map as you go from place to place but you can avoid them and/or escape battles by moving your main character to the end of the current screen.

Sometimes people find it hard but only because they're not willing to adjust their setup and tactics to overcome the obstacles and just try to grind until they can win mindlessly. The game is pretty easy as long as you aren't completely retarded.

>Minstrel in the Romancing SaGa
That's kind of cheating though, besides, the Minstrel isn't really that good of a character in the games he's in, he's kind of a generalist with no real weakness but no strenghts either, unless you really like it many characters are better than him, and in Minstrel Song he can't be used if you want to finish the game for plot reasons, he's more of a crutch for the first hours of gameplay and a lore character.

Legend of Mana gives Frontier 2 a run for its money, but they both also employ obviously pre-rendered assets. Something made entirely with tilesets like Suikoden 2 is just as impressive for working with less, for example.

Good thing is S1 is also really short by JRPG standards AND you can import your save into S2 so it's worth playing through regardless. He'll also understand why S2 is considered a perfect sequel by many int terms of building on top of the original game.

You can totally use the Minstrel in two out of three of the endings, however.
You can argue his TWEEST ending is the canon ending, but he's still both very viable and very likeable to have in your party. Not to mention the most readily availble end-game viable character you can get.
Feels like a bad choice to have such a 10/10 character be left out.

One of my favorite parts about Suikoden 2 is the castle. Just watching it grow over time and seeing characters you recruit open shops and hang out at various places in the castle. All the minigames you can do, going to the bath, just talking to everyone. I really love it. I dunno if any other games do that as well but I'd love for more games to do it.

I'm pretty sure LoM doesn't have any prerendered assets unless you consider digitalized drawings as such, the characters' sprites are all hand drawn, Frontier 2 does use some prerendered assets for the monsters and characters' sprites in duel mode though, and some of the big bosses I guess.

Both games are made by the same people anyway, I guess the artist who did the backgrounds is one of the few different staff members between the games but most of the others are the same exact people.
>>379194242
>but he's still both very viable and very likeable to have in your party.
Well, it's a SaGa game, as long as you nurture your characters you can use anyone doing anything, that's one of the main points of the series.
He is "inferior" to most of the cast when it comes to key factors such as BP or stat growth in the sense that he's mediocre in all fields, but as long as you keep him in your party he'll get better naturally, in Romancing SaGa 3 it's a bit trickier since stats don't grow at all so you notice how he lags behind others much more than his Minstrel Song counterpart, you might even hate him since once you recruit him you can't get him out of your party unless you kill him off or seal a gate.
>>379194586
If you want to follow Frontier 2's story you must keep in mind that Gustave and Wil's story happen at the same time, it is best to complete one scenario for each MC at a time by chronological order, the game does allow you to skip scenarios and proceed how you want but the plot will be really hard to follow by doing so, especially in Gustave's side since he has so many protagonists like Kelvin, Johan and Kelvin's children.

Wouldn't call it the best but it's certainly one of the most overlooked.
A shame the game's very easy outside of the Gargoyle, but I don't really have anything bad to say about it, the voice acting is also quite literally the best I've ever heard to this day, no joking.
Really liked how it used the very same SaGa growth mechanics and implemented in a mini SRPG battlefield formula, the survival elements were also great and so were the setting, music and characters, truly a shame that Sacnoth died and Shadow Hearts became something completely different.
>>
>>379195883
>Koudelka

Eh. It's a game that essentially inherited the worst elements from JRPGs and survival horror, and requires a very specific mindset to enjoy. Gear degradation and random encounters don't mix in my opinion. Also, it's short as fuck on the survival horror side and isn't long like you'd expect out of a JRPG.
>>
>>379196248
>Gear degradation and random encounters don't mix in my opinion.
The problem with gear degradation is that it suffers from the usual problems of the mechanics, you either get tons of drops that effectively negate the breaking problem altogether or get almost no drops or shitty gear that just push you to invest on bare handed attacks and never look back.
Due to the really strange decision of making map loot randomized you can also find an obscenely strong weapon early on that fucks your growth and perception of balance by steamrolling everything until it breaks, leaving you with subpar base stats and no good weapons at all while bosses just walk all over you because lol, your bare handed attacks are shit and you got no weapons.

It was an interesting experiment despite all of its problems though.

It's Wizardry on a console. Not sure what else there is to write about. 6 man party based hardcore dungeon crawler (although this is a pretty easy game, as far as Wizardry goes). This game is kinda like a proto-Etrian Odyssey in many ways, and I think the people who made this went on to create Etrian Odyssey, so there are a lot of beats that feel very similar-ish. Combat is fun and the dungeon design is very good and never feels like it's irritating with some gayass mechanic that no one enjoys, like teleporter mazes. The only cons for this game are the slow combat animations which can make the game drag on if you aren't the more patient type and that thieves are a useless class since they don't bring useful dungeoneering utility like they do in other Wiz games and their combat abilities are really poor. Highlights of the game is that it really feels like you're adventuring with a party of people from an 80's / 90's fantasy anime, like Record of Lodoss War.

I like this game's job customization system. The game has all sorts of usable weapons, magic and special items. Even curious party members like Berserkers with whips or Black Mages throwing Ninja scrolls are possible and viable.
Status effects mean a lot, even the very last boss can be petrified and paralyzed.

I will post more than one:
>Romancing SaGa 2
Generational, non linear gameplay with a huge cast of characters, great quests and memorable villains coupled with an extremely solid and challenging battle system and game design, the freedom of building your team and progressing through the game is amazing especially for a SNES game, non linearity and quest variations depending on many factor make the game extremely replayable too.
>Unlimited: Saga
The most progressive JRPG on PS2 and possibly one of the most progressive RPGs in general, using many revolutionary mechanics applied to the classic SaGa formula of freedom of choice in main characters, character building and story progression, not for everyone and requires quite a lot of work to understand fully but it's an amazing game for real RPG enthusiasts.
>Metal Max 2:R
DS Remake of Metal Max 2 from SNES, another RPG that emphasizes freedom and nonlinearity all around, coupled with the vehicle mechanics typical of the series and customization, tons of contents and a pretty tight battle system, not to mention the cool post apocalyptic setting that ties right into the first Metal Max in terms of plot too.
>Frontier Gate Boost+
Unsung PSP gem by Tri Ace, you play as an explorer in some kind of fantasy frontier continent with a thematical setting similar to that of the first american explorers, the main character is created by the player and can be fully customized, as you progress through the story you'll meet various characters and you can choose to partner with one of them to complete various quests and develop your relationship with them, finding out who they are and why they came to the Frontier, battle system is vaguely similar to EoE/Resonance of Fate but without the directional element and more focused on building combos with your partner, tons of quests, an amazing OST and some quite good writing make it a very good game, if not a bit grindy if you want to 100% it.

What's a good JRPG with mechanics similar to "The Genius of Sappheiros"?
Here's a list of them:
>party consists of 6 members, can be interchanged at any time from around ~18 characters
>plenty of different party formations that have different probabilities of targetting depending on position, also offer different stat bonuses to characters in specific spots
>characters can equip various equipment and equip up to 6 different skills, changing them at any time (not in combat)
>character have specific skill trees that can be changed around at any time, one character can go from a tank/support role to an offensive role in an instant
>status ailments are relevant and work on plenty of bosses, many bosses almost require specific strategies and can't just be brute forced through

I think Romancing SaGa 2 is brilliant. In many JRPGs you can build a party, but once you reach a tough boss you're basically stuck with whatever skills and classes you arbitrarily decided to train several hours ago so you can't really do much. If you were to go back and prepare specifically for a boss you would just become overlevelled so preparation would be pointless. But in Romancing SaGa 2, your characters' life points will get depleted in your travels and you will sometimes get wiped out. And then your next emperor will take up the mantle and avenge your previous loss by specifically forming a team to overcome the challenge. And you'll face stronger enemies now that you've fought more battles so the adventure is still fun.

If RS2 ever gets a Minstel Song-esque remake it might be the greatest game of all time.

Why can't I get into Romancing Saga? I played Frontier like twelve times. But RS it's always the same. I start out, do a few quests, can't figure out what to do next, and just lose interest.
All the while, constantly worrying that I'm fighting too much and might accidentally raise the battle rank or whatever it's called.

Also, are the party members at pubs random? Or is it set in stone? I picked Aisha and only have a few towns open, and keep cycling through them but there's just nobody at the pubs to choose other than the Minstrel. So I'm still suck with a generic Warrior dude.

>>379204481
Minstrel Song is full of mechanics that you must really understand before being able to pla the game consistently
>Also, are the party members at pubs random?
Most characters travel around the world as you do, so while they do have set patterns they appear at different locations as you move around, making it seem like they move randomly, some characters like Hawke, Neidhart or Diana are fixed, some characters also don't appear depending on your MC, Albert can't recruit Diana for instance whereas anyone else can, some other characters like Jean/Gian require you to complete their quest in order to be recruited, some characters like Darque are only available to NG+ files, some characters also can't be recruited again if you kick them out of your party like Friere/Frielei.

It's complex stuff, the anons in the SaGa threads on /vr/ can help you run through the game without spoilers and answer your questions thoroughly, as long as you don't mind /vr/'s glacial speed.
