advance wars DS has very bad layering problems with sprites, most cursors are invisible on most tiles, most effects are invisible on most tiles
pokemon heartgold/soulsilver have some bad shimmering issues and infrequently kill the display entirely until a working save is loaded
layton games have some minor issues but are very playable

if the visual (sometimes gamebreaking) issues didn't still outweight the inconvenience of owning a tiny handheld console then i would have bought one long ago. still very many issues, however.

It may not be "so shit", as I have emulated quite alot of DS games (well, not alot, but all I wanted I played without much troubles) too, but compare DS emulation to PSP, and you have difference between sky and earth. It's also rather funny how PSP emulation skyrocketed in last years, while DS is pretty much where it was ten years ago, despite working DS emulator appearing years before PSP emulation was possible at all.

I have played dozens and dozens of DS games on desmume, and it's fine. Fiddling with the resolution is kind of pointless when a good chunk of the games is 2D only anyway. Besides that, there's a fucking fork that does exactly that.

I disagree. Desume has resolution hack that makes it mathematically 200x better than the original (192p vs 4k), and games can be loaded directly into RAM to completely eliminate loading that are present in the original hardware. Only thing shit in this situation is your machine.

It's almost like the work that goes into emulators is spurred on by the effort and dedication of the people making it or some shit.

When you have a system that lots of people enjoy and want to play on you have a bigger support for the people making the emulator to be as good as it can be.
The DS has no such following and desmume stopped caring once it was "good enough"
PSP was widely hacked and loved by pirates for years, even after production stopped. So it had a massive following.

Same reason there is no real xbox emulator. Noone gives a shit and there is nothing really worth playing on it bar a couple games.

The only criminal in the whole affair is a PCSX2, it "should" be much better than it is, there is a huge PS2 following yet it is struggling to even get compatibility with most games and then FPS on the games it CAN play. This could be due to a monopoly on the PS2 emulation scene, there are no other options, everyone is literally sitting there waiting for PCXS2 to hurry up and be better. Compare it to dolphin which is pretty good with it's quality and compatibility.

I think it falls into the "good enough" catagory, most nintendo games on the N64 work fine, everything else tends to run like shit. It's almost like they are working on a "by-game" priority system.

Couple that with alot of speedrunning communities who still play N64 games rejecting and refusing N64 usage you see a big decline in N64 emulator demand. Goldeneye and Perfect dark are still pretty huge communities and they outright reject submitting from emulators.
