Any of you guys playing multiplayer on wifi? Is it that bad?
>>
I used to use AT&T wifi with the router on the same floor but behind two closed doors in another room and the speed was just always consistently slow and shitty.

Now I'm on Time Warner Spectrum or whatever connected over wifi to a router that's on the first floor behind a closed door while I'm on the second floor and the speeds are occasionally MUCH faster than ATT but now the connection drops from 5mb/s to 700kb/s extremely often and it'll sit there or jump between the speeds for an hour or more. This doesn't even happen at "peak hours" I've had it happen at 3am.

Most games aren't actually hurt bad by being on wifi, there are some like Overwatch or MMORPGs that become absolutely unplayable-y laggy if the speed drops, but the most noticeable wifi problems are when I'm using a voice chat program, downloading something, or trying to watch netflix while grinding/farming in an MMORPG
>>
Dude it isn't 2004 anymore, playing over wifi is not going to have any noticeable impact on latency and online gaming.

I live at home in a rented townhouse so the parents had the say in where the router went and even then we could only do so much without drilling a new wire hole through the walls.

Yeah I use a desktop with a third party network card with 3 small antennas. I can turn my computer around 180 and face them towards my door to slightly boost the connection but that just causes a mess with wires and pulls my wired mouse and keyboard in weird ways

I have a plug in range booster similar to an adapter kit but the outlet layout in this house is so goddamn bad that there's literally not one outlet in a clean line between my room and the router. Anywhere I've tried to put it is just as slow as connecting to the router.
>>
It can work for a bit, but it's always going to fall behind with packets and you'll have brief moments of ping spike before returning to normal. Every single router on every ISP I've ever had does this. If you haven't ever noticed it, the games you're playing are hiding it from you by showing some casual ass 'signal bar' instead of a ping value.
>>
>>379158528
The added latency at worst from using wifi over ethernet would be a few ms, depending on where you live your connection could be anywhere from like 10-80ms.
1 or 2ms really isn't going to change much.

wi-fi is generally fine for anything that isn't a fighting game.

If you play with wi-fi in fighting games though, you shouldn't play at all for the sake of you and the people you play.

It doesn't matter how godlike your internet is, the unavoidable packet loss of all wi-fi connections is enough to fuck up any game that has to be frame perfect.s

Yes, well, you see... What happens is the wire helps suck the information signal from the air and divert it down a specific path, making it faster than the speed of light.
>>
>>379160121
I know this is bait but...

Literally everything between your PC and the router interferes with the wifi's signal you retard, this isn't a problem for you because you live in a dryboard house that me casually turning around with my pants down would knock down.

This house? this house is made of brick and stone, my phone can barely stay connected when I'm taking a shit in the upstairs bathroom.

As long as the signal is not intermittent, a radio receiver should be able to amplify the signal and extract the data from the carrier wave. Otherwise, radio waves propagate at near light speed.

you can use internet and play most games with 2MBit/s internet. And I don't mean "browse naked html pages" with "use internet". 2MBit/s is fast enough to watch 720p videos without buffering and it is possible to even watch 1080p videos without buffering, but only if that particular video is cached in a close-by youtube server.

Only things that you need more speed than 2MBit/s, is Streaming, Watching HQ Streams and Multiplayer games with horrible network code.

I think there are not many things that are "not okay" in the realm of playing video games online, but using a wireless connection is one of the things. That is, being too prissy to hook your oh-so-portable gaming laptop into the modem / router and using the wlan out of laziness instead of using a cable. Or like if the router is in the room over and you can't be assed to drill a hole through the wall and just get a wlan stick, or whatever. You people are fucking Hitler.

If 4g LTE is your only option to be able to get online at all... that still really really sucks and you should think twice about which games you can and can not play because you're still flat out diminishing the experience for everybody else, though in my experience that can actually be less irritating to play against than, wireless lan, somehow.

wi-fi is fine for playing games if you're not in japan or korea, because infrastructure everywhere else in the world is bottlenecked to a point where it's insignificant if your ping is 100 or 200, netcode aims to reign in anything higher than like 50, unsuccessfully.

Obviously a lower ping would be great but since the lowest you can reasonably get in the states is sub-50, you'll always have insane amounts of lag that make it inferior to playing locally, be it FPS or fighting games. nips just have us beat, sadly. I wish infrastructure was a bigger goal for the states.
>>
I always have 10ms-20ms ping in every single online game with servers in USA using my WiFi router. And there's no packet loss.

Except even the ridiculous AC5300 setups struggle mightily to touch the gigabit barrier in very ideal situations, let alone regular use cases, and then you get to the fun shit like the link being half-duplex and being shared by every single device etc. Meanwhile that $10 cable is only limited by the switching hardware in your network and TCP overhead.
>>
My internet speed is 1000/1000 for €39 a month with an ethernet cable and around 900/900 with wireless. Ping is the same because it's fiber broadband.

Yeah, modern well setup wireless is so good that 99% of people aren't going to see any difference to wired, but Cat5e is still technically better. I use wired just because the radio spectrum in my apartment complex is a total clusterfuck with a million routers screaming on top of each other and my apartment has 4-5 wireless devices contributing to it already, so going wired guarantees me solid performance without any setup fuckery or extra investment in extra high power radios.

Stability and consistency is vastly more important than speed. Modern games for the most part can compensate for someone with shitty ping, but they can't smooth out someone who keeps having inconsistent gaps in their updates.

Not him but I have slow Internet. I'm on satellite which means on average I get 1-2MB/s. 5MB/s peak in the early AM, it's not uncommon to dip under 1MB/s during peak hours. Besides the whole problem with latency (and price), my speed is fine. I still watch 720/1080p videos just fine most of the time. I rarely torrent or download large files so it isn't a big deal. If I had ~100 latency I would be happy. My only other option is to switch to 4G, but the start up costs are steep for me atm. I'd have to spend around $1000 for a decent antenna, mount it, then buy a shitty modem and pay out the ass for service.

Nothing to do with the comcast monopoly raping you to death and telling you what speed you can and can't have. Land of the "free" indeed.
>>
>>379165576
Didn't Google gave up on it's fiber rollout because they couldn't be arsed to deal with all the red tape involved with setting up a fiber-optic network even with all the money they have. It's probably why Google Fiber is only available in towns in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and a small selection of "major" cities.

Hey, it's not a Comcast monopoly, it's a Comcast and AT&T duopoly that's raping us to death.

If it was just a monopoly people who got sick of their service would have to switch to a small company or demand the government do something; but since there's two of them, any dissatisfied customers just bounce between the two of them eternally like a corpse being fucked from both sides. It's a MUCH more efficient way of raping us to death, I assure you.

>>379166528
Yes you are, the worst kind.

Not even trying to be funny but I'd 100% support a mechanic that makes it so that when any given fighting game detects you're not playing on a wired connection, you don't get to play online period. SFV with the crossplay, it's SO painfully obvious 90% of playstation users play wireless. God fuck get a fucking LAN cable how hard can it fucking be, what the hell is up with that, it's a home console that never gets moved...! Just because it's got an inbuild wlan module people refrain from getting a fucking 5 bucks cable, which could improve their connection tenfold, blows my mind.
>>
>>379167408
One of the big reasons why console babbies play on console is because it's easy to set up. Just connect to TV, connect to wifi and play. Simple. No console babby is going to move the router to the living room or where ever the console is at. Especially if they can't move the modem.. Why bother? That's too much work for them. Might as well get a PC at that point.

The FCC is ran by liberals. Did Colbert get fired for saying "cock holster"? Did he get fined, at least? If it was anyone but a liberal propagandist, they would have been fucked. We've seen this for years with Howard Stern on the radio. Although, Stern is a faggot now and not even on terrestrial radio anymore for over a decade.

You're confusing the two. I guess I used the wrong words, "network TV". On paid channels, like CC, you can pretty much do/say whatever you want. FCC has little to do with it. But, on ... open air channels, such as NBC, ABC, etc, channels that you can get for free over the air, like radio, is a big deal and the FCC reigns over it.
Colbert is on NBC. A free channel that you can pick up over the air.

>>
>>379170912
FCC doesn't give a shit about Comedy Central b/c it's a cable TV network. FCC don't give two shits about what you do on cable TV (though the advertisers might unless you're HBO or something).
>>
>>379171434
Yeah, which you have to pay for.
See this faggot >>379171636
One of the reasons why you don't see a lot more lewd or naughty words on basic cable is because of advertisers. It has nothing to do with the FCC. Even South Park had an episode where they said SHIT over 100 times.
C'mon. Bill Mayer said nigger on HBO recently. It's not a big deal. But faggots are making a big deal out of it. A channel that has porn on it. REAL SEX 69.
You'd be surprised what basic channels are able to get away with if they weren't cucked by advertisers.

I connect to an wifi signal almost 4 miles away, I use an antenna on my roof connected to a power supply that uses an Ethernet interface instead of the good old pig tail, then from the power supply another Ethernet wire comes out that goes into a TP-Link router which repeats the signal inside my house.
Sort of like this.
I only get 2mbps download and like 0.70kbps upload, I get like 30-70ms ping with this setup.

4G it's faster but the ping is too high to be usable for games, I used to connect using my cellphone years ago though but then I couldn't play games at all.

Regardless of what any faggot would tell you, it really depends on how far the router is from the console/PC. You should use 5Ghz if you want the best speed/latency. Of course, connecting directly to the router with a cable is best. Even if the router is too far, you could buy pic related if you want best latency. Latency is all that matters. Don't listen to these fags that blame wifi on why they suck. You'll be fine. Look at your latency in game. As long as it's under 50, you're fine regardless if its connected or wireless. Even though, you could be over 50 depending on the server.

when you throw in the fact that they revoke your service if they have any evidence that you're even running a torrent program on a computer connected to their network and that you can't directly access/customize the routers they force you to use, it's really a deal that only normies will appreciate.
>>
The only time I would recommend gaming on a wifi is if your router has a 5ghz option as opposed to the old standard of 2.4

The problem with 5ghz however is that while it is stronger, it's range is shorter. So you need to be even closer to it.

At which point nigga just use a cable.

I use 5ghz wifi for my pro and my TVPC so I don't have to run a cable across my hallway. It works really well and I don't really notice a difference between it and wired. It caps my internet bandwidth just fine although I admit it is a bit slower for transferring files from PC to PC
