Anno was offered to direct the new Toho Godzilla movie after his award winning short film 'Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo' (https://vimeo.com/64987176) which used an impressive blend of traditional tokusatsu elements and CGI. That was originally the goal for Shin Godzilla before they went full CGI. The creatures coming out of the tail at the end was a nod to that short film which got him the job as director and a nod to his work as animator in 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' where he worked on the scene with that same Giant God Warrior.

Shin's actually probably one of the most brittle incarnations of Godzilla to date. Also the most lethal in terms of bursts of destructive force. The glass cannon of Godzillas. I think Cloud would be just fine honestly. We see him move at damn near relativistic speeds in Advent Children and he's proven more than capable of tending to skyscraper sized issues like the Weapons, Sin Bahamut, and an actual skyscraper.

I was never a fan of godzilla, only saw a bunch of movies and not a single one of the toho originals, but damn have I enjoyed anno's take on it. The only gripe I had with the movie is that the characters were all incredibly bland and uninteresting and the social commentary of the incompetent japanese government dragged a bit too long, maybe the movie would've benefitted from behind 20-30 minutes shorter? Still, super fun.

What are the toho godzilla must-see for someone like me?

its technically not ice. Shin had a biological nuclear reactor in his core. That produced a lot of heat, and it cooled down by expelling blood.
They hit it with what was basically a blood coagulant on steroids. This left Shin unable to cool down, and it was forced to perform a SCRAM and shut down its own reactor. Deprived of their power source, that caused its cells to harden. They just made it look like it was freezing into ice for dramatic effect.

A shut down reactor really can't start up again on itself. So if Shin wakes up it'll be because someone or something restarted its nuclear fission reaction

that said, they specified that it needs oxygen to fuel its fission, so if enough fighters got into position and blasted Shin into orbit it would probably die. Just don't get greedy and blast it into the sun because it would probably adapt to consume raw hydrogen instead

The thing that annoys me is that the explosions are obviously normal explosions repeated along a line. Instead of being a continuous one along the path of the beam, they just spawn individual explosion effects (likely recycled from other effects with a different colour) every x distance.

Oh, I agree from that point of view! But to me it looked like Anno had no intention of focusing on anyone in particular, it does show that Japan is a country of hard working people that together can advert the crysis and I really liked that aspect of it. At the same time tho, it kinda irks me a bit, because it feels a bit odd to me, I wanted many of the characters to be more than "oh, I found a solution, check this pc monitor!", but I realize there wasn't either not enough time or it wasn't the point to begin with.

But yeah the main focus was how humanity as a whole work together (and have conflicts) on how to destroy Godzilla, like the original Godzilla movie.
I really loved the city panic shots, the part where Tokyo people rush to the subway and other underground conducts, and the light goes off, and they all scream in total panic, only to be buried in concrete by Godzilla's destruction.

First form was basically a giant sea serpent that sprouted hindlegs to better maneuver through the shallow rivers. It was drawn towards tokyo's reactors. When it reached the limited of how far it could go via water it forced itself onto land and kept basically 'swimming' along the ground as best it could. But it kept running into building and other obstacles, so it shifted to its upright second form for better maneuverability. However despite pissing out blood as coolant, it was overheating too fast. So it went back into the ocean to cool down, and then changed into its third form, which is is large enough to be less bothered by the uneven terrain (read: smaller buildings) and can regulate its temperature via atomic breath, which also conveniently doubles as a defense mechanism in case those flying metal things it saw turned out to be dangerous

Even without taking into account the intricate political story on Shin (which may turn off some people, I liked it) and the generic "family drama" in 2014, the Godzilla scenes alone are much, much better in Shin. Godzilla 2014 is just a generic giant lizard with too much obvious CGI and other monsters that have nothing to do with Godzilla at all.
Shin Godzilal is totally CGI, but it looks like an actual rubber suit. It's the first time I've been fooled by CGI; I swore it was a suit (his final form anyway, the baby godzilla was clealry CGI, but it still was very well done).

Basically, Godzilla 2014 feels like another one of those Michael Bay movies, Shin Godzilla is the return of the King of Monsters.

To be honest if you liked Shin Godzilla but don't like older Godzilla films in general then what you want is the 90's Gamera films. They're more realistic and better written than almost all Godzilla films, Higuchi handled the special effects and monsters, and Anno helped out too.

A lot of people consider Gamera 2 Advent of Legion to be THE best kaiju movie of all time.

Godzilla is a walking multi-stage disaster. The first third of the movie is a criticism of the Japanese government quibbling over red tape and who is supposed to be taking charge of what. After that they assemble a thinktank of mostly younger specialists who actually recognize that priority 1 is figuring out a solution and who will be held responsible can wait until after Japan is actually saved. it also places emphasis on Japan's presence on the world stage and how if they need to cooperate with other powerful nations, particularly the USA, who have their own citizens safety to think about and are willing to go to drastic measures to ensure Godzilla won't leave Japan alive.
