No matter how good of gameplay something has, unless you can form some kind of investment, it's very hard to actually bother playing. The story can be complete Dogshit, but the atmosphere and premise of the game needs to be something engaging.

Obviously there are exceptions like multiplayer games, racing games and simple arcade games.

The only way to enjoy Super Mario 64 is if it was your first 3D game. I got Super Mario 64 in 1998 along with the N64 and Playstation and I found it utterly boring since my first 3D game was OoT which I played to completion before trying anything else we got for Christmas that year. I had more fun with Mega Man Legends than SM64. I only got around to finishing SM64 when I had literally finished everything else.

Nothing in the game matters as much as proper direction from a team that knows what its audience actually wants and how to execute it perfectly. It's all about setting up goals for yourself and doing everything you possibly can with your limitations to achieve said goal to the fullest.
Breath of the Wild is in the title itself, do you feel like you are in the wild, experiencing something refreshing as if you are breathing cold air at the top of some mountain? Yes? It had good direction and the team knew how to balance out gameplay and other elements to achieve it.
What about Silent Hill 2? There are very few works in any medium that achieve that level of suspense and tension just by the use of it's atmosphere and sound alone.
Vidya right now has so many tools and mediums overlapping it, there is a way to make your audience feel something and experience something exactly the way you imagine it if you don't fucking phone it in and have a clear vision of what your product should be.

I pretty much agree with these... except after playing videogames for like 18-19 years, i value few qualities in a non-multiplayer-game above all else; originality of gamesystems, overall game direction and in some cases very finely tuned and challenging, yet rewarding difficulty.

For that reason I find it practically impossible to get invested in modern triple-A single player games, ive pretty much given up with them by this point. They all go through similar industrialized low-risk production processes, they all have very similar game systems and core-features and only the setting changes between games. There are no interesting mechanics or features to delve into and combat is more often than not a meaningless experience since the games usually dont challenge you on any level and you simply hop through the same hoops again and again until the credits roll.

Last triple-A singleplayer game i fell for was Prey, another installment of literally nothing new, interesting or challenging; game tells you exactly where to go and what to do and the combat bored me to tears within first few hours.

Last 3 'new' modern single player triple-A's i actually finished were DS3, Doom and XCOM2, and they were all last year. Luckily enough indie scene is better than ever.
