I know that 4e brought some really good changes, like the saving throws being tied to two different attributes instead of just one. So Wizards wouldn't just fail every willpower checks on mind affecting spells, because they have no wisdom, despite having tons of int.
But I just can't stand the 4e official cosmology. The Great Wheel was so much better.

I mean from level 1, you get throwbombs then have your pawn open the first mimic chest, then once you can beat gazer . If you are on a max phys run enchant flame short bow and instant kill death for big exp.

Buy bombs (there are 2 types, i dont remember wich one, you can get it from a shop in the starting town) and throw it at it from the stairs. it does % damage on HP so he does pretty easily and you can solo it even on lv 110 if you have enough bombs.

I just finished my first playthrough as a warrior and I didn't really have trouble with the one I fought once I knew how it worked. Getting petrified by a cheap shot because I didn't know he could do it was still kinda bullshit though. I haven't gotten around to the DLC, so maybe they're worse there.
