Any time an old person tells you that the old ways are better, just smile and nod and recognize that, statistically speaking, more than 40% of their brain mass is gone, and they are essentially on human autopilot, stripped of all creativity and forward thinking.

All high quality modern animation is 3D. 90% of this frame is 3D. There is a reason for this. It is not only better looking but also immensely cheaper and easier to work with.

Agreed, Miyazaki himself had a very misguided rant when someone tried to show him a procedural zombie walk animation.

He could've just said "that's neat but I don't want to use it" but he went on a long pissy rant about how it represented the death of the human spirit or something.

That doesn't make his movies any less great and I appreciate the dedication to traditional methods but he is getting a bit long in the tooth

Miyazaki did nothing wrong. He's pretty spot on about anime and CG work. Hopefully the standards will improve enough where he's wrong, but that isn't the case for now.
>>
>>379144324
the animation industry was ruined by businessmen who used computers as a crutch. He actually didn't mind computers, but the way they were used by his industry was hardly for improving animation, which was the point he was making.

He's not wrong, over-reliance on CG is one of the many cancers killing anime.

they're showing off an AI. been a while since i've seen the video, but the whole zombie flailing was just an example of what the AI could do. they could have done a demonstration of something else it could do. that's my major point.

They were specifically showing off a zombie AI moving itself along by using its head as a limb because it didn't have the concepts of feeling pain and protecting its head, and how this is not something a human would easily come up with.

Look at the bottles on the left and how poorly they drew a circle, can't even do a decent oval, look on the right at the paper and how poorly the corners and lines are when not having the computer do all your work, not only that but the room itself and the larger furniture is done in a different style to the actual drawn things, the least they could have done is created a unified look.
It's clear that low skilled people worked on this, you want me to lie to you? So you feel better than less skilled people taking shortcuts that look uglier and clash, to anyone that knows what they are seeing?
Why can't people just accept that the leve skill and hard work has gone down hill in animation?

Are you retarded? Animation has always been done this way. Environments have never been in the same style as the actual animated parts and usually not even by the same team. Just look at whenever some rocks get blown up in Dragon Ball, they stand out from the rest of the environment like a sore thumb before they start moving.

I never got why anyone gave a shit about him.

>>
>>379148721
He's right though.

He wants to make family-friendly films, not horror movies. That animation seems perfect for a horror themed game, which he himself said was fine if you wanted to use it for that.

In other words, he's tired of edgy faggots who want every fucking story to be grotesque or dark. He only wants lighthearted stories.
I agree with him.

>>
>>379148185
This is honestly the most retarded video I think I've ever seen. Miyazaki is right to be skeptical of AI, but his reasoning for doing so is absolutely pants on head retarded. Tomino for /m/
>>
>>379152279

The point he's making is that the animation is stiff and unnatural, and does nothing to capture life. He's not just missing that the animation is about a zombie, he's making a point about how animators want to just make impressive or shocking animations without ever really thinking about what can be drawn from life itself.

Think about how cliche and routine "horror" is in pop media. It's easier to make creepy and unsettling visuals when you are making things unnatural on purpose because its certainly a lot easier than trying to capture anything from life. Think for example of all those generic and shitty scary house simulators that hack indie devs make since its easier to make on a budget than something with more detail.

To clarify, its obvious that he is also inserting a subjective interpretation about certain aesthetics or themes into his judgement, but I think what he says about it still carries a lot of weight. Horror is one the most routinely peddled out genres in Hollywood and the airport bookstore for a reason.

And the whole point of that demonstration was that they AI developed was using its head as a limb without any care for the safety of the head, which is not something you would draw from life. Miyazaki completely missed the point.
>>
You mean someone who is old and out of touch, but everyone sucks his dick because he used to make great shit?

Miyamoto.
>>
>>379154373

I think Miyazaki does understand, he just often launches into lessons about values he believes others need to remember. Learning from life is a talk that Miyazaki constantly has. He didn't misunderstand anything, he's saying that the purpose of their demonstration is trite and meaningless, not that they failed at it. It seems like the people criticizing his criticism don't even understand what he's saying.
>>
>>379154987
Miyazaki launching into a random discussion of the values of life in that situation is in itself trite and meaningless. But I suppose the first mistake was made by whoever decided to show technology to Miyazaki expecting anything else.

>I had an illusion about video games. I thought that better technology would take away the tiresome tedious parts of gameplay that players struggled with and enhance the story.
>I realized that that was a mistake, and that actually players that were playing technologically advanced simple games with an emphasis on stories in them made it more tiresome for game designers later.
>When you take out gameplay only story is left and then players think that that is exactly what games are supposed to deliver.
>So the movie-like methodology enters players' brains, and the game designers who weren't that good with designing gameplay mechanics to start with get lousier and lousier in making games.
>>
>>379155191

He's saying the goal of the technology overall is meaningless, everything he talks about relating to art relates to life in general. He's trying to tell them to ditch the computer project and work on their own art skills.
>>
>>379155709
That is their art skills. Miyazaki is an old fogey who sees no value in technological progress, when those people were working on something that was in itself quite impressive.
For an obviously relevant example, video games would never be where they are today if the world was full of people like him.

Let's be honest here, Miyazaki has a point but the people on /a/ would never acknowledge that, humans have emotion, they give emotion to what they draw or what they make, not computers.

I remember Miyazaki complaining that computers literally anime themselves these days and that's very concerning, I agree with him.

The sad thing is, Akira is pretty much the closest we can get for comprehensive and full animation maybe.
>>
>>379155919

You mean the medium that has been elevated countless times by its own Miyazaki?

Miyazaki's criticisms pertain to cartooning, which has a level of manual labor craft that video games doesn't, which is innately tied to programs and computing. Shiggy carries his own hardline mentalities into the medium though, which comes out in his own fogey old man ways, like the fact that he hasn't really fucked around with physics systems or even know how to use the internet. But he has undoubtedly contributed to the medium in irrevocable ways.
>>
Miyazaki is an asshole. Incredibly talented man but an elitist prick through and through. The Stanley Kubrick of anime.
>>
>>379144742

Miyazaki clearly. Because its a goddamn video game they're developing this for. AI based animation is an absolute MUST for the future. Theres only so many animation cycles you can put in a game and they can't predict everything the player is going to do. Which is why we get that awkward transition jerk in every goddamn game ever made.

They were fools showing it to him though, I don't know what they expected.

Why?

>AI based animation is an absolute MUST for the future.

What

>Theres only so many animation cycles you can put in a game and they can't predict everything the player is going to do.

What

>Which is why we get that awkward transition jerk in every goddamn game ever made.

What

Please study animation.

Agreed to some extent but he's wrong with AI animation

AI animation is great and is making huge strides
>>
>>379156863

Because video games are subject to player interaction. You can't possibly prepare for every stupid thing the player can possibly do, the animation of your characters is never going to look natural. If its AI based that circumvents the problem. Your characters aren't snapping to some scripted and reusable animation the player will see over and over, it's working on the fly.

>Miyazaki's criticisms pertain to cartooning
His criticisms pertain to animation in all forms. The animation in that video had clear uses in video games (as do many forms of procedural or otherwise computer-manipulated animation, such as tweening), but Miyazaki just dislikes it because he thinks it has no feeling. I have little doubt that he wouldn't like any video game on an animation basis, as they all use the same few animations throughout and only the most important cutscenes are fully animated by hand.

That is a valid criticism, but Miyazaki probably doesn't like video games as a whole as well. Which is fine, its not necessary for an artist to enjoy everything their patrons enjoy.

I guess I should have clarified my point. The design's simplicity often makes characters look fat-faced, and looks goofy at some points. This shot looks like big head mode was enabled. The backgrounds are fantastic, as are the mechanical and monstrous designs, but the human characters kinda stand out.

Miyazaki's a cranky old fuck but his point isn't simply nostalgia for the old ways I think, he just dresses it up in an old rambly man way. Majestic Prince has the best CGI mecha I've ever seen, and some incredible fights as a result of it. The new Berserk is just absolute trash with zero budget or care for a quality product.

Go watch Majestic Prince or something instead, people usually skip that because of the Hiraiface when it's totally worth watching.

That becomes a plot point later on. The Festum get left behind in terms of weaponry evolution, but assimilating the lab at the end of the first series gives them more and more human knowledge, including division of labor and large scale siege tactics
They develop super-festum leaders and it honestly feels like humanity is doomed

>>
>>379166079
That does sound good, and while I've forgotten much of the series by now, I think the biggest problem I had with the Festum was in the nature of their attacks and their interactions. They create that void that just straight up eliminates anything within it, and early on they always have perfect accuracy, able to easily target fighter jets and wipe them out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, and yet whenever Kazuki fights them they just always miss. There's no reason given for this, they just always miss him, and that's the only reason he survives.
By interactions I mean how the Festum keep asking "Are you there?", and in the early episodes it's strongly implied that if someone responds to them that this would cause an event of cataclysmic proportions, and it does make the Festum quite terrifying in the first half of the series. Then in the second half Kazuki gets his mecha upgrade and every time the Festum ask "Are you there?" he responds with "I am here!" and... Nothing happens. It was a build up that never amounted to anything.

I don't know what happened with it but it had an incredible set up that just ended up becoming a huge mess.

>>379166514
Oh yeah, the first series was definitely mediocre. I might be totally biased when I rank them, but Fafner is a 6/10 and Exodus is a 9/10.
For the specifics you address in your post: If I remember right the first fight in Exodus is fighter jets vs regular festum (jets win), and the festum evolve to a point where Fafner mind shielding doesn't actually stop them from assimilating your brain. Lots of gory deaths for generic Euro soliders who have last-generation hardware.
Kazuki goes blind because his upgraded mech is ridiculously powerful and he gets benched for the first half of the second series

Facebook isn't making people stupid, the internet itself is. People can now form whatever beliefs they like, and support those beliefs by using the internet to collect fabricated "facts" and surround themselves with other stupid people who agree with them. 20 years ago, everyone vaccinated their kids. Now, so many people avoid doing so thanks to online communities that circulate falsified information, that it's actually causing a resurgence of diseases that were nearly eradicated.

These days, you can even find people who legitimately, honestly believe that the world is flat, thanks to the internet. They don't have to confront real facts, knowledge or counterarguments, they can just stay in their little online bubble and continue poisoning the world with misinformation.

Colonel Sanders is right.
Digital artists are honestly the biggest pieces of shit. I get why they're needed in the video game and graphic design industries. Sure, do it for work. But people who choose digital art over traditional art are just lazy losers who know they don't have any real artistic skill nor potential. Digital art could have brought whole new movements to the art world, but instead, all you talentless losers do is try to imitate traditional art.
>Look, I made something which LOOKS like a painting, isn't that impressive?
No. No it is not. It's pathetic. There's nothing impressive or skillful about using your baby tools to recreate something which takes actual effort, patience and passion.
>b-but look at the work of this one person on deviantART, it looks amazing!
And it was achieved using the absolute easiest method of art available. Do you play your video games on easy too? Because that's all it is. If your entire interest in art revolves around impressing people and stroking your narcissism, then you're no more of an artist than those college kids who cover pages in period blood and faeces. They only do it for a cheap response which fades within seconds, just like you.
If you genuinely feel proud of your digital art, I feel sorry for you. You've chosen a shitty medium to focus on and somehow deluded yourself into believing what you're creating matters.

Prove me wrong, /v/. Show me some digital art which tries something exclusive to the medium. Something which hasn't been attempted in traditional art. You can't, because it doesn't exist. Because digital artists don't have the passion to start a new movement.
>>
