Is the PC port really that bad? I want to play it but I don't

Yeah it was absolutely awful having to play through Blight town without crippling slowdown.

With dsfix and mouse fix it's fine. They had no idea what they were doing though, so prepare to troubleshoot.

PC Port is abysmal. However, DSfix + DSMfix is able to fix most of the major issues. I'd recommend playing with a controller if you have one, though.

If you want reliable co-op/pvp, especially with friends, you'll also need Wulf's connectivity mod.

As a side note, DSfix lets you set the framerate to 60, but this can cause some strange issues in game. There's a certain ladder in the second area of the game that you'll just fall through if you try to slide down it. In general the higher your framerate, the faster your character will fall vertically, making some jumps more difficult.

Other than that, once you've patched it up with mods, the PC version is the definitive version. Not to mention you can fuck around with other cool mods like limbo or randomization.

It's fucking fine, I played through the entire series on PC with no issues last year and my machine is mid-range at best these days. I even used a few texture/UI mods.
