The newer designs are better than Rareware's. Rare were great, but character design was never their strong suit, they could only get it to work within the confines of the N64's graphical limitations.
That being said, the Yoichi Kotabe design for DK was better than the Rareware one.

Man I marathoned all three classic DKC games and it was magical.

Although for some reason I really cannot get into the new ones. They feel floaty and wierd to me. Also the brighter mood feels less stylized.

New DK games are slow and sluggish and copy pasted trees do not look good.
Old DK trilogy is perfection. Smooth and looks amazing even to this day

2 has slightly better level design in the later levels, more consistent theme throughout the worlds, a more consistent atmosphere and tone throughout the whole game, and more fluid movement.

That said TF2 is really, really close.

nuDK level's are all scripted bullshit, DKC2 felt open-ended even if it was in 2D.
