Are CRT gaming monitors & TVs a meme?
>>379128410
Nope. They can display the mystery colours.
LED and LCD monitors and TV cannot.
>>379128487
>the mystery colours.
You Misspelt Color.
>>379128919
not sure what point your attempting to make here but the LCD image looks like shit for people that aren't in the autism spectrum. sure, it's a little sharper and it has "better" color reproduction but it isn't being displayed how the developers intended it to be displayed.
text in any 32 bit and under game automatically looks like shit on an LCD too because there are no scan lines
>>379129214
>how the developers intended it to be displayed.
You mean a shitty composite cable?
>>379129214
>says that LCD looks better
>goes on to complain that the image isn't cluttered by ugly ass scan lines
It is undeniable that CRT's are the one true answer to seeing old games as the developers intended them.
Just like how an artist knows how the paint type he's using will interact with what he's painting on. Game devs knew they were making 2d games for CRT TVs, and the visual design takes that into account to achieve the best looks that the games can.
They obviously still play fine. But you are objectively losing something that made the game what it was if you aren't playing old vidya on a CRT.
>>379129746
confirmed underage
>>379129652
>Some SEGA Genesis games used dithering in places, so I'm going to play in shitty blurry composite instead if RGB
>>379130226
>you are objectively losing something that made the game what it was if you aren't playing old vidya on a CRT
input response for one unless you're playing on an actual monitor instead of a TV
playing on the actual console is almost impossible because of the upscaling and it's effect on latency. emulators are better but still not as good as CRT
>>379129652
interesting design choice here, they added details in places that can't be seen at all with the composite connection, but based that entire pipe texture to look best when viewed on composite.
>>379130496
>emulators are better
You're just emulating fun. You're not having "real" fun when you emulate a game since you're not actually playing it. It's artificial fun. It's not real.
>>379130495
I already played them like that when I was a kid
Now I got a real display and give 0 fucks about what the developers intended
>>379130678
i recognize this is a poorly crafted ruse but i will respond anyway because you're so fucking dumb:
i didn't say that emulators are better, i said that input latency is lower with them when using a TV because they run at a higher resolution and so they don't have to upscale the resolution from 240p which kills the input latency.
>>379130678
Nice meme, here's your (you)
Having purchased two high quality CRT TVs myself, I can reliably report that playing games with CRT artifacts (scanlines, glow & blur) is not a meme. Some games were just meant to be played on older hardware.
Star Wars Battlefront 2, for example, is lightyears better on my CRT than any LCD panel. The game looks like pixelated garbage on HD TVs, but on my CRT the picture is so smooth and gorgeous. It is easy to forget that the game is running at 480i because the natural blur generated by the CRT hides all of the rough edges. It's like free anti-aliasing! In addition, scanlines make pixel art truly pop.
It is worth noting that modern emulators such as Retroarch are able to reproduce CRT artifacts in most of their glory. As these shader techniques are perfected it becomes less necessary to go out and purchase an actual CRT display.
>>379130984
Then why do handhelds not have any input lag? Protip: The switch is not a handleld.
I've been looking for a decent CRT to go under my 55" LED literally for light gun games and that's it. Craigslist sucks but I'm hitting the Salvation Army down the road weekly checking as they usually have a few big ones for less than $20
>>379131227
Can't go wrong with a sony trinitron.
>>379131130
>Then why do handhelds not have any input lag? Protip: The switch is not a handleld.
the smaller the screen, the less latency
protip: the switch is a video game console that can be held in your hands while playing, it is a handheld
>>379130226
>CRT's are the one true answer to seeing old games as the developers intended them
Except CRTs were not really standardized. They all have slightly different aspect ratios and different visible areas.
So unless you have the exact same display the developers used, you really aren't seeing exactly what they intended.
>>379129652
This. I see too many people mistake that CRT's are what cause that pixel smearing effect when it's really the video signal that does it.
>>379128410
there's something there, but it's also fairly obvious that this is the audiophile meme for the next generation
>>379131275
I'll keep that in mind while I'm looking, thanks.
>>379131121
i feel like we got jewed into shitty LCD, plasma ect displays because of cheaper manufacturing costs and consumer "need" for the next best thing. where would CRT be if we had all this time spent on developing it?
>>379131287
Just because you can hold something in your hands doesn't make it a handheld.
>>379129214
>People who like images to be sharp and with good colors are autistic
>Normal people care about LINES on the screen!
>>379131440
>where would CRT be if we had all this time spent on developing it?
SED
>>379131489
well
actually you're wrong
>>379128815
This is a great idea actually, I always have the hardest time stacking my eggs but this would make it a lot easier.
Saw some people at a con playing Killer Instinct emulated on xb1 and it simulated the scanlines to give a mostly authentic look. Looked decent but not perfect replica of crt.
>>379131979
>but this would make it a lot easier.
How are you CURRENTLY stacking your eggs anon?
>>379131715
Just because you don't know what a handheld is doesn't mean you're right.
>>379132197
Well, the same as anyone else does, I guess.
>>379128410
>Is XYZ a meme
This has about as much meaning as calling something comfy.
>>379132363
Many people on 4chan now inexplicably believe that meme means "something bad" or "something I don't like".
>>379132363
CRTs are comfy though...
>>379132274
care to elaborate?
>>379132197
You take a wooden square and place the eggs tightly enough so that their little end is pointing up, then you place the next row upside down and slightly smaller than the base alternating their orientation and on slightly smaller rows.
>>379128410
>$5000 for an outdated piece of shit TV
Only tryhard retards would pay for that
>>379132731
Let me spoonfeed you.
http://letmegooglethat.com/?q=what+is+a+handheld%3F
>>379132524
The irony is that meme usually applies to something popular and spread around due to that popularity. Meanwhile, CRTs are not only not popular any longer, they are not spread around either. In conclusion, OP is an faggot underageb& that should end his life.
>>379132756
>so that their little end is pointing up,
How do you find the end of an egg? I'm being 100% serious here.
>>379133031
You start with the beginning of the egg and follow it to the end. What exactly are you confused about?
>>379133350
WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?
>>379128410
You can get a good Trinitron for free if you keep your eyes open on Craigslist or whatever. Tons of people just give 'em away when they get a new TV.
>>379130226
>>379130496
2D Console on CRT TV > Emulator/Console on Frameister >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Console on LCD modern display
Oldschool consoles compose the picture at the same time they send it to the TV, so they have "0" input lag (more like 3-10 ms), but only if the TV is actually displaying the drawing as happens with CRTs.
Then emulators/frameister use a technique called double buffering, where it sends the previous frame while drawing the next, which adds 16-20ms of input lag, and the same can be said about 3D consoles in general.
And then there is the shitty upscalers on modern TVs that add SEVERAL frames of delay to perform that deinterlace filter that is not even needed with 240p signals, but they do it anyway and add 60-500ms of input lag.
TVs ideally should just engage line doubling/scanlining when they detect the same field being sent over and over again... but they don't, which is pathetic.
>>379133441
Doing what? You act like you've never had eggs.
>>379133764
>You have to stack ALL the eggs
>>379133656
>TVs ideally should just engage line doubling/scanlining when they detect the same field being sent over and over again... but they don't, which is pathetic.
Are they designing modern TVs wrong on purpose?
>>379132554
god damn im jelly as fuck
>>379133879
Yes.
>>379128410
Just use filters
>>379132554
Why have both if the PS2 has a ps1 inside?
>>379132835
looks like you're still wrong, anon
>>379134781
ITS COMFY OK
>want a nice, cheap CRT
>check my area's craiglist every week
>nothing
IT'S NOT FAIR. WHY IS EVERYONE ELSE'S CRAIGSLIST SO MUCH COOLER?
>>379134781
So he can still play Tomba?
>>379135519
Hit up them Goodwills nigga! I got my Toshiba flat crt there for 5 bucks
Turns out all the Tv's my parents used to have were sony trinitrons. If only any of us knew back then.
>>379135767
Goodwills don't carry CRTs anymore and haven't for 5 years. That's what my other retro gaming friend told me and I already checked the one closest to me anyway.
>>379135909
Craigslist then
>>379135767
This. Goodwills in general are amazing. Found a SNES/NES/Genesis aftermarket system plus a game collection for 25 bucks.
Gotta get your thrift on. It's getting more difficult with the rise of the internet. More people know what they have now.
>>379128815
>warm egg
>cold glass
enjoy your stuck egg
>>379131440
Not how capitalism works bud
If crt shit was worth it, it'd still be a product consumers would be buying
Some niche consumer base isn't going to dictate what producers make
>>379135909
Well I got mine 6 months ago from there so keep lookin! Also salvation army has them too.
>>379128410
no they have lower ldisplay latency, truer blacks, and variable resolution.
paying resellers 5 grand when you dont have autism is a fucking meme
>>379136090
What coast does goodwill still sell CRTs in? East or west? You bought it in the U.S. right?
>>379133879
>>379134251
No, both 480i and 240p are 15khz signals. Because 480i is much more common, since it was the broadcast NTSC standard, when modern TVs receive a 15khz signal they apply deinterlacing. It's not like those old consoles' video signal contained any metadata about what resolution was being used. So naturally, since people expect their video shit to work, the TV plays it safe and applies deinterlacing.
>Go outside
>There's a nice CRT on the curb with a piece of paper that says "free TV" on it
>Take it
>Component and S-video inputs
>The only con is the speakers don't work
>Just plug in my headphones anyway
>>379135994
>>379136178
I bought it in Texas where I live so thats like mid south
>>379135519
Where are you, Anon? I've got a Samsung CRT that's collecting dust and I've just been too lazy to get rid of it. 26", flat screen, component inputs. I'll give the damn thing away if I know it's going to someone that will actually use it.
I'm in middle TN. I don't really like the idea of meeting someone from /v/ in person but I doubt there's anyone on here in my area anyway.
>>379132554
so i just found this one at a local auction
no one has bid on it its $30.00 with some other misc medical equipment
should i bid?
the bid one is this but black
same exact model
>>379136514
Texans throw out their CRTs every other week, see them at pretty much every Goodwill I go to, where the hell are texans getting all this shit?
>>379136667
Go for it. PVMs are absolutely god-tier
>>379136272
Actually, it's quite easy to distinguish 480i from 240p because the signal already have to tell the television the current field of the picture, if its Odd or Even, and it does it by a timing offset on the vblank signal.
All the deinterlacer have to look for is the signal always using the same field over and over.
>>379136864
fuck yes thank you
all i needed to know
>>379136272
Why does a tv NEED to deinterlace? Can't it just display the image interlaced?
>>379136823
It's a big state lol. You'll still find a lot of crt's in rural town goodwill's in Texas. I live in Austin so not a small city but we still have a shit load all over the place. Thrift stores are super popular in this hipster city
>>379137310
It looks horrible when it's actually 480i.
But on 240p with line doubling at least, it just looks like an emulator.
I use a CRT tv for N64 and PS2 games because those look like dog shit on an hdtv
>>379137791
My PS2 looks bretty okay with comp cables on my samsung hdtv
>>379134781
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdjYk-fle1o
>>379137791
PS2 looks gorgeous as hell on an HDCRT.
>$5k for a CRT
>Pickup only
>$580 shipping
WEW
>>379131317
When you emulate the ! Blocks disappear?
>>379136864
but there is no RGB option i just found out
is it still worth $30?
i want a good experience with my older consoles
will this monitor do that justice without RGB?
>>379141380
It's bait friend
Did you ever play the game?
>>379141582
No RGB, no buy.
A CRT is still unmatched in terms of delay. It's damn-near instantaneous but some LCD monitors can come close but that's only with modern tech like HD-capable consoles and modern PCs.
If you're playing on anything PS2 and lower, you can't beat playing on a CRT for the sake of input lag.
Hipsters crack me up, but considering that fucking typewriters were in vogue a few years ago this infatuation with CRTs doesn't surprise me
