I haven't finished P3 yet so I can hardly comment on Junpei and whether or not he is in fact Da Man. I found Ryuji hugely enjoyable so he's really got his work cut out for him.

He does get better towards the end (there is a very brief scene featuring some character development on his part that will almost certainly be forgotten about in expansions) though no they don't drop what is what of the core themes of the game.

Most say FES as it has the most story meat. (Although the answer is only worth playing with exp cheats) Haven't played portable but people say skill cards and control over your party makes it too easy.
