I think what's most important about Overwatch's aesthetic and general feel is that it's FAMILY-friendly without alienating KIDS. Kids past the age of seven want their interests to be seen as mature. Overwatch is bright and colorful with no blood and only mild swearing, but it greatly emphasizes its cool-factor, especially with the animated shorts.

By comparison, you have another hit with Splatoon, which is definitely a good game and a success, but I can't help but feel that a large portion of kids 10-15 were put off by its overtly kiddy look and feel. That goes completely against the ult mechanic overwatch has, since you're not likely to have many in one match.

The map design is absolutely horrible too. It mainly revolves around a few chokepoints per map. You can basically ignore most of the map, since there is sometimes barely more than one way through a point.

On top of that Blizzard put in some dumb characters like Mei, who has 2 skills which take any dynamic from a match.

Don't even get me started with huge as hitboxes or autoaim ults, that makes dodging nigh impossible sometimes. The game is incredibly unrewarding those who want to avoid getting hit.
