I actually played and beat Robopon. It was...not very good. Weird as shit and felt like they were trying to do a 2-3 different types of games wrapped around a Pokemon clone.

Sold it on Ebay for like $140 bucks years ago though. Curious how much it is going for now.

Played the SHIT out of this during a long family roadtrip. Got to some part where I had to fight Bosco, possibly at one of the championship matches. I saved immediately before fighting, but then found I had no chance of ever beating him, and there was no way to go back and train more, so I gave up.

I remember there were a couple areas where you could get a free robopon, and you could point various remotes at the cartridge to change what it would be. I got some big fat blue motherfucker and he kicked the shit out of everyone.

It was downright terrifying for me going through the Boo Manor at that pace because the music would be unbelievably distorted, which made a not-so-terrifying level that I later replayed into a what-the-fuck kind of experience. Kinda true. Honestly speaking, I haven't updated my emulator of choice since a very long time (possibly due to fear of losing my saves I had since around 2008) and if I did, I did it very carefully. All I use nowadays is what many might consider a very old version of VBA-M from 2015, I think, which runs surprisingly well. It does have these odd save/compatibility issues (like with this one Dragon Ball RPG game, unsure of what else), but then I tried out the emulator you just posted and... it doesn't seem as smooth as the one I have gameplay wise and kinda stutters. One recent emulator I tried afterwards from the same year with this SVN code could no longer play one certain game, which I got hesitant about.

I might use it for games I might run into having problems. This one just seems to work the best for whatever reason. Maybe because it requires less and plays more smoothly. I can even play Mother 3 well in it. I don't usually update my emulators that much either.

The story I heard is that since bamco does in fact own the rights to the IP, WayForward can't do anything with it. Their kickstarter for Half-Genie Hero initially started out as a Sigma Star sequel, but they had to drop that idea because they couldn't raise money for an IP they don't own legally.
