It's the one DLC that is literally riddled with scripted events. How are scripted events in a completely linear DLC in a game that is about open exploration and freedom of choice the best gameplay?

Old World Blues is best for players who like the wacky Fallout elements and also open exploration.

Dead Money is best for people who like the survival aspect of NV.

HH and LR is best for people with mental disorders.

Unlike FO3, I would say none of the New Vegas DLCs are actively bad. Worst for me was either Lonesome Road or OWB. OWB felt too easy and dialogue-heavy, but had some cool features and was the most lighthearted for people who wanted a change in tone. Lonesome Road was linear as fuck and full of pseudo-intellectual rambling dialogue I just didn't give a fuck about. Getting another SPECIAL point at the end of LR was useful though I guess.

Having been to Zion myself, I really appreciated Honest Hearts' Utah setting. I was underwhelmed by the new factions, weapons, and story, but it was a nice little distraction from the main plot of New Vegas.

Dead Money was the strongest of the DLCs IMO. Loved the story, loved the setting, loved the creepy atmosphere, and it was easily the most difficult of the DLCs due to the courier starting without his gear. It was also really rewarding because the fully upgraded holorifle is probably the best weapon in the game. Even the massive exploit/glitch at the end that lets you get away with all of the gold was fun to pull off. Really made it feel like I was getting away with a massive heist.

Not bad but HHs environment and exploration gets pretty stale on replays when you notice there are like 4 caves and one shack in the entire map worth exploring. Everything else is just spent walking and shooting at ants.

The gameplay in LR was absolutely horrid. IT was completely linear and enemy detection was bullshit, going with 100 sneak and stealth boy and i still could not sneak up on marked men.

That's because most encounters with them are scripted.Which is the dumbest shit i can possibly imagine.I genuinely can not believe why somebody thought that was smart.
It completely defeats player agency.Being carefull, being prepared, being sneaky, none of it matters. You just pass a spawnmarker and the scripts start running no matter what.

Honest Hearts
It starts off strong imo for about 30 seconds, you're escorting that caravan and then suddenly you have to survive that ambush
After that they managed to make a whole new environment where you participate in the ooga-booga people war underwhelming. Only crispy jesus was really interesting, especially if doing subsequent plays, but otherwise the tribes are so samey and lame. You got the savage ooga-boogas, the Joshua's tribe, and then the pussy canyon dwellers. Would have been neat if they fleshed them out some more and let you even choose sides rather than "do you want to fight White Legs or pussy out and run from White Legs"

It will probably fuck up everything because every single faction in the game has blackies in it but I digress, i must remind the wasteland of the white might whatever it takes. My plan is to instantly clobber in any negro NPC's face in when I meet one. That means Easy Pete's got to go. At least House shouldn't get too mad at me.

Anyway, since this thread is here, I wanted to ask if going into this game unmodded is a good idea for a first playthrough. I've never played any of the Fallout games, and I want to get New Vegas when the summer Steam sale comes. I don't know if this game is like STALKER which does need some mods to really be at its best, or if it works just fine vanilla.

I think it is fine without mods, but i also played it at release on a 360 and thought that was fine

If you want to go unmodded then at the very least install the 4 stability mods people usually recomend. The game works fine at first unmodded but eventually it starts to crash as the save file gets older. The stability mods will fix that and make the game more stable in general. It doesent really need mods othervise, its a fine game without them. One mod some people recomend is JSawyer's mod. Its made by one of the devs but its not an official patch.

even if you want to do a vanilla run there are some mods you should just install always
the absolute must haves no matter what are all the mods that simply make the game run better
4gb patch, anti stutter, anti crash etc...

beyond that there are many nice quality of life mods like enhanced first person camera, JIP companion menu and pretty much any UI overhaul that don't really affect the vanilla game at all but just make the game nicer to play
