I disagree. C47 was beginning of the series so it didn't have much to live up to.
Absolution on the flip side, was a sequel to BM. IO already established series' core. so you would expect them to continue on BM. But no, Absolution takes in totally different direction.
So that's the difference. I agree that Absolution is overall better game than C47, but Absolution is way more rage provoking.

How is TM? I've never played Hitman -- own Blood Money on PC but never played it because there's no controller support.

I'm hoping it goes on sale during the Summer Sale.

If it had been a full release with a more coherehent story, it would have been the best of the bunch. As is, it had the the highest quality of missions all over, but suffers from the seasonal launch crap that make it feel disjointed.

Absolution is not really a proper Hitman game, but it's my guilty pleasure. It has such a stupid, pulpy atmosphere and story and the game itself is pretty alright if you take it is a normal stealth game (with the exception of the batman vision mechanic, whatever it was called, and needing that to blend in). I would place it above 1 for sure, I probably also enjoyed it more than 2 which was decent, but still had problems with level design and clumsiness. 3 is where the real fun starts.

TM is basically a return to traditional Hitman after Absolution - There are fewer levels but each one is a lot bigger (aside from the special episodes which are just partitioned off areas of other levels). It's missing a few things and there are handholdy prompts everywhere, but you can turn them off.
