If it weren't for the six level grind wall before Astos, I'd argue FF1 is a better game. FF5 is better mechanically but lacks the flair and FF6 is pretty comparable.

It's one of the best Final Fantasy games, but that's about it. An 8/10 that could have been better with more competent writing, better pacing, and some more polish outside of the presentation.

All right. The game play for FFXIII was also garbage. Paradigm system has nothing on the Gambit system for FF12 where you could program the AI for your other two characters and tell them exactly what to do. The paradigm system was a streamlined version of that and made game play a chore to slog through. The Eidolons were useless except to replenish health and stall for time.

There was no open world until the midpoint of the game and that is also the point where everyone claims that the game gets "good" which is not true. I can at least say that some of the bosses, the Eidolon fights, and some of the regular enemies posed a nice challenge.

Most of the characters were unlikable: Hope, Sazh, Snow, and Vanille were the most annoying in particular.

The most interesting parts of the story were in the pieces of lore that you picked up and read in the datalog, and even then they couldn't get the entire story as well as the lore straight because they kept changing things about it as we got to the sequels.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 should have never been made in the first place and it was rendered pointless through it's own ending. They also added DLC to that game and expected everyone to pay out the ass for it.

Lightning Returns is just a complete clusterfuck and it's ending is garbage.

Kids that weren't alive when this came out can't appreciate how badass the graphics were at the time. Fuck man playing this at its demo station at the local blockbuster was a life changing experience. Finally being able to rent it was unbelievable. I had played and beat every NA RPG that there had been, other than rare ones like earthbound.
Combat was fine, standard FF fare. Only game that had done it better was SMRPG. Materia was a nice change vs preset stats.
Red's whole storyline was sad. Aeris too, her death was a genuine shock. Older FFs had party members die, but not in this graphic detail. Hell you lose Biggs, Wedge and Jessie too. The entire lower city. Felt like you just keep losing. Felt worse than nigger Kefka ending the fucking world.
Seeing the bigass swamp snake impaled by Seph after it could one shot your party.
The mini games and choco ranching were great.
Clouds twist was a mindfuck. All of the Shinra/Seph/Mako experiments were fucked up.

Best JRPG, yes. Best FF, no. FFT was better.

FFVII is practically as unfinished as Xenogears. While the latter cuts Disk 2 gameplay, FFVII's whole is literally an unfinished, unpolished beta that Square was too scared to debug because they thought it could break the game. The only difference is that FFVII's story didn't have a specific section so obviously truncated, but it's overall quality suffered immensely.

As a kid, I had never played CT, none of the rental places had it and no one was selling it. Honestly never even heard of it until like 2004ish when I got into emulating.
If I had played it first, it probably would be my number 1 just due to secrets, incredible pixel art, amazing branching story and base gameplay.

FF6 doesn't deserve to be in the competition. Gameplay was varied between characters, but not really. Every unique gimmick was still just a skill.
Story was hard to care about because you had like 15 party members, most of had equal story time. Right when you started caring about one, time to not see them again for 3 hours.

After leaving Midgar and hearing clouds story the next prompt for where to go next is seeing sephiroth on the mapscreen walk into a cave. Easily missable thanks to the rotating camera, and the far more visible chocobo farm getting your attention.
So you go to the chocobo farm and the farmer talks to you like you were looking for a way to cross the swamp. If you saw Sephiroth going into that cave on the other side of the swamp, everything's all good, but otherwise you're left wondering if you sequence broke the game or it's glitching out.

Apart from some joke characters and situations, the characters aren't retarded unless you count Seph's quick turn to heel. Otherwise, the plot is well written for JRPGs. You don't find half-assed writing nearly in the entire game nor half-baked motives and reactions to the events.
It isn't like FFVIII when they were talking about Seifer and Squall had an autistic fit and yelled that he would never die and just run away from the room or Zidane suddenly becoming a pawn of the big bad and being saved by the power of friendship.
