Solas was a fantastic antagonist (especially with regards to delicious, delicious lore), the romance angle was interesting and well-executed, and more games should feature antagonists as party members and definitely let you romance them.
Also, he did nothing wrong. Burn the shems now!

Dragon Age has awful writing and this isn't just contrarian memeing. While the concept of a Grey Warden was cool, the world building is lacking and too generic to truly call cool.

Stuff like the Architect and DLC DA2 and DA3 antagonist has been done already far and plenty times before.

The original concept for Dragon Age was to basically be their "dark" sort of replacement for the generic Forgotten Realms, since they made their name off of D&D titles (though they seem to have completely dropped the "dark fantasy" stuff pretty quickly).

I think being somewhat generic, but with enough to establish it as its own thing was always the goal.

That's a good point, and I should've mentioned it. It is true that you can only learn blood magic from two sources - directly from a demon, or from somebody who already knows blood magic (which is presumably how Hawke learns it, considering Merrill knows, and part of why the Forbidden Knowledge tomes are so dangerous).
That's one of the Chantry's great concerns about blood magic, but the simple act of learning from a demon doesn't in itself lead to irrevocable corruption, and there's nothing inherently wrong in learning or using blood magic only as a power source like lyrium. There's nothing at all to suggest Merrill was 'falling prey to' the demon beyond the words of her delusional Keeper, and in fact her caution and care with spirits - they all have something to offer, but you always have to be careful - is probably the most sensible attitude towards spirits/demons in the entire series behind Solas' own. A Warden and Mage Hawke can also learn and use blood magic with no consequences.

This was incredibly fun if you use it to your advantage, though - dual-wield Assassin/Shadow rogues are the best way to play through the game, by the end of act I you can reduce anything that isn't a full boss to bloody chunks.
It did make fighting Assassin enemies a nightmare, though, because they'd usually just oneshot you out of nowhere and they prioritise the most vulnerable targets. I remember Zevran's sidequest threw a dozen or so of them at you at once, so if you didn't kill almost all of them within ten seconds of starting the fight they'd stealth and murder your entire party.
