To be honest, the Jap version of DMC3 is actually about equivalent with the first game as far as difficulty goes. It's just that the US version of DMC3 originally shipped with hard mode set as the default difficulty and some shitty new revival system because they wanted the hardcore audience or because DMC2 was criticised for being too easy or whatever. I think the Special Edition and HD versions make the difficulties the same (and renamed Hard mode Very Hard).

There was that thing a while ago about how they wanted a new Dead Rising and DMC. Dead Rising got the spot light last year. Makes sense if they wanted to start both at near the same time, that they'd start working on DMC5 a little after leaving this year to be it's year.
