Thankfully the message feature enabled me to leave a message showing the exact point where you could bait them one at a time, so that made running through to farm ttitanite easier.

Summoning ,makes things easy, but people won't and then complain that it's too hard. Using a bow to kite makes things easy, but people won't and then they'll complain. Wizardry 4, unlike the rest of the series, exists primarily to kick you in the dick.
Pretty much every other game in the franchise, while still difficult, gives you a chance. You're expected to make your own map, sure, and it'll still kill you a bunch, but it didn't get THAT cruel when it came to fucking you over when it came to figuring out where the fuck you were.
Wizardry 4 was an exercise in sadism for the designers. Wizardry 4 fucking hates the player.

The FOE paths are safe IIRC. It's still incredibly annoying because the FOEs move one tile every time you move two so you get twice the amount of random encounters if you follow them.

What's so annoying about it? I just had the Dragonrider bow on my pure STR knight character and shot the priestesses to death easily. The area itself is really beautiful and is one of the most moody and atmospheric locations in the entire franchise.

That is a bad thing because dodging or blocking three to five homing projectiles with the longest range in the game while trying to avoid falling off a cliff and bleed causing enemies hiding under the water is a tad bit troublesome.

Wizardry IV was designed to be the hardest game ever. It's not even an RPG you can level past your problems in because you get a set number of level ups in the game as you progress past certain points.

That being said it's a 30 year-old game and it was a different time and it was made for a different audience. It's bad design for a major audience, but back then games were designed for a niche and weren't intended to appeal to everyone. The CRPG niche wanted ball-bustingly hard. A game didn't need to sell a million to break even, 50,000 sales would have been an unthinkable success. In the eyes of the people these old games were made for the design was perfectly fine.

A modern example might be a fighting game with techniques that require a one frame input window. It's bad design for most people, but there's a niche that want to practice nearly impossible moves for years. In 1987 there were people wanted their balls busted in an impossible dungeon for hundreds of hours.
