The irony is that IMO the 'nighttime metro' tracks in the previous games- Monolithic Studios in NFS2, Empire City in 3, and Zone Industrielle in Porsche Unleashed- are way more memorable than any of the dingy city streets in either Underground game except maybe the airport area.

Midnight Club 3 is actually one of the biggest personal annoyances because there's no definitive way to play this game unless you have an actual Xbox. PS2 has extreme aspect ratio issues where the PAL version looks aspect correct but the image quality is shit, NTSC version is stretched, PCSX2 is missing details and shaders on hardware, software doesn't get me 60 fps, Xbox 360 backwards compatibility doesn't work on regular consoles, but works on hacked consoles though has reproducible crashes.

The problem is that IF you don't make mistakes (perfect launch, good corners, use ALL shortcuts, perfect shifts..), they just catch up. Like the game tries to match your level but tries to be still a bit more difficult than that.

So when you do perfect laps, they will just be perfect + 1. Like I was having half a lap advantage, then the enemy just kept getting closer in a straight line. And at the line, he literally just flew past me while I was using Nitro.

It really was Fast and Furious that caused this trend. Racing games are some if the simplest games to design for a damn good reason - adding in some sort of plot or story generally is a mistake that is detrimental to putting effort where it matters - the physics and design.

The plto any racing games should ever should "become the best like nobody ever was" and even then that is stretching it. I don't boot up burnout, destruction derby, vanishing point etc etc to find out i'm running from the mafia in some sort of cannonball-esque chase.
