I have my doubts. Rex is far more obnoxious than Shulk, Elma, or Lin.

However, Nia, judging by the concept art, the translated script from the trailer, and her facial expressions has a high chance of being the best girl in the Xenoblade series.

So I never got into XC1 due to how ugly it was at the time. I played XCX and got halfway through. People insult turn based games for "mash X to win" but I felt like this was more the case with this game, so I know I won't play XC1 for the gameplay inb4 someone thinks their opinion is right and mine is wrong. The story also felt worthless so I stopped keeping track of it. Music was abysmal, especially in town. The final straw that got me to quit was that exploration felt TOO easy, thus lost its magic once I got my Doll.

With all these problems in mind, is the story, music, and exploration in XC1 better enough to justify me giving it a try with HD graphics?

Will it live up to Xenoblade 1? Maybe. XB1 was an old story made new again thanks to a novel dub and decent story/mechanics/setting integration. Stuff like visions as a gameplay and story element, the Bionis and it's pose affecting the biomes you go through etc.

Will it live up to Xenogears? Ha ha ha no. Xenoblade played it super safe by spicing up a generic story rather than trying to tell a huge story. X was kind of ambitious but mostly in the sense they tried out a bunch of stuff instead of focusing on core story. This looks like they're retreading Xenoblade 1, and maybe they'll succeed at it.

Considering its 12 chapters, I will stick with halfway through. Still, unless the combat changes at its core, there isn't much it could improve for me. Good thing I don't absolutely have to enjoy the battle system to enjoy a game though.

Guess I will give it a try before XC2 comes out.

NLA Day is alright. The real problem was the lack of variety in it. Just a day and a night theme for the one city in the game, which you spend upwards of 30 hours in if you're going for a 100%, is ludicrous. Especially because NLA Night is garbage.

Still, it's more than made up for by the Ma-Non ship. Nothing in XC comes close to the continent themes in XCX, either. Even Snowy Valak Mountain Night doesn't compare to Sylvalum Night.

That's very true, considering how the avatar system is used (everyone has the same animations if they're male or female). It's part of the reason why I'm so conflicted about X. A lot of the game is at odds with itself; they make a setting that's detailed in sidequests and incidental NPC dialogue to make up for the lack of a main story, but ends up just making you wish there was more main story.

Yeah sometimes it seems like XCX's systems are working against each other.
Like with the huge amount of party members. It discourages experimentation because party members who aren't fighting dont get EXP, so everyone just ends up severely underleveled if you actually try to rotate your party a lot.

Xenoblade lasts too long for how awful the gameplay is, and it suffers from Tales syndrome where more than half the cast takes a backseat and are only there to vaguely spice up the repetition. The plot was above-average, if not overly-long as previously mentioned. The game shines in the variety and originality of its setpieces/worldbuilding, something I wish would've translated to BotW given how obvious it was that Monolith Soft was contracted to design Hyrule.
