Gothic 1 has an unusual control scheme, but after a few hours it'll feel natural. The game doesn't have a tutorial, and the manual doesn't come with the digital version, so I'm going to save you the trouble of running around trying to figure out how to pick shit up.

You have an action button you hold to tell the game that there is an action you'd like to perform, and then you press a direction way to indicate which way. So for example if there is an item on the ground in front of you that you'd like to pick up, you hold action, and press up. If you are in combat mode, you hold action, and press up/left/right to attack, and down to block. You let action key go, and you walk in that direction instead.

This is the logic the entire control scheme follows, from talking to NPCs, to opening chests, or navigating the inventory.

You need to patch the game a decent amount to get it working with modern resolutions, and an unlocked framerate. The Gothic ½ System Pack is essential for that.

There is - Gothic games are overrated garbage. Awful controls and linear story that appear as "open" at first but quickly forces player to go "optimal' route ot get their asses buttfucked. Oh and awful combat (seriously, people call Morrowind combat bad?).

First Risen was "gothic made right", true but actual first two Gothics? Awful. Third could be bearable if not the absolutely shit combat where you could liberate entire town by just spamming lmb and having everyone else sitting at the back and patently awaiting their turn.
