Gordon Freeman, in the flesh - or, rather, in the hazard suit. I took the liberty of relieving you of your weapons. Most of them were government property. As for the suit, I think you've earned it. The borderworld, Xen, is in our control, for the time being... thanks to you. Quite a nasty piece of work you managed over there; I am impressed. That's why I'm here, Mr. Freeman. I have recommended your services to my... employers, and they have authorized me to offer you a job. They agree with me that you have limitless potential. You've proved yourself a decisive man so I don't expect you'll have any trouble deciding what to do. If you're interested, just step into the portal and I will take that as a yes. Otherwise, well, I can offer you a battle you have no chance of winning... rather an anticlimax after what you've just survived. Time to choose...

Chet Faliszek said he doesn't know what he wants to do himself just yet.

Marc Laidlaw mentioned that he is tired of gamedev routine; therefore, I think it's safe to assume he will change the industry (he'll probably go back to writing books again).

Don't know about Erik Wolpaw though.

i have lost all hope for half life 3.

its just not happening, valve is a huge clusterfuck that stays afloat because of the giant cashflow from steam.
If even half of the leaks from valve staff are true then its pretty damn obvious that half life 3 is better of never coming out, because we all know how duke nukem ended up.

Trust me, it's still coming, we'll eventually get a half-decent clone of Half-Life, since someone is eventually going to try and cater to that potential market

>Are they working for someone else?

Out of the our main writers of Half Life 2:

Erik Wolpaw left Valve in February 2017 and is working as a writer for Psychonauts 2.

Marc Laidlaw left in January 2016 and is working on his own original stories. One of the excuses he gave was his 'age' on why he left despite he was 56 and a writer not some type of construction worker or w/e.

Chet Faliszek is the one who left Valve over a month ago, he's working on an unannounced project.

Kelly Bailey (composer for Half Life, Portal) left in 2011, came back extremely brief in 2014 (no one knows what for) and by 2016 it was official he left Valve.

Viktor Antonov who was the art director for Half-Life 2 left Valve in 2012 and was the most vocal of all about Valve (not sure if he broke any TOA'a by announcing why he left). But this is what he said.

>"I left precisely when they stopped making epic, triple-As, which was Half-Life 2, since then, they were episodes. Valve is a great place, but I'm interested in projects, not in companies.
>"Valve has grown into a much bigger company, and what I really enjoy about the philosophy of Arkane is that it's a small, core team that does risky creative projects. And when I went to Valve, they were a small company. They've grown now, they're much bigger, and I'm interested in a certain level of creative risk taking and a certain energy that can be compared to jazz, jamming or rock n' roll, where it's small, it's intense and it's about making revolutions in the media.

I'm missing a couple of more, but you get the gist. Most of Valve's talent has been bleeding out of the company for the past couple of years. To anyone who says "yeah well you know they can replace them I'm sure they did!" well would've gotten some type of hint on who Valve hired at this point. And for a Half Life sequel, you're going to need some type of consistency, especially after losing all your story writers.

> its pretty damn obvious that half life 3 is better of never coming out, because we all know how duke nukem ended up.

This is not the best comparison. Duke Nukem Forever's budget was entirely tied on the profit that Duke Nukem 3D made. It all came out of 3D Realm's pockets primarily that of George Broussard. He was also a person who micromanaged everything for DNF and infact most of the fault is solely on him. Outside of Duke Nukem, 3D Realms had no other product to make a profit off of. Some money here and there from rereleases of DN3D and giving the license out to third party devs for the PS1 and N64, but other then that the development of DNF was limited.

Valve on the other hand has billions of dollars. Billions. If Gabe wanted to, he could hire dozens of teams to make a dozen AAA titles with the money he's made without investors meddling in.

then why dont they do it?
They could make up a team of the best devs of the US with the money they have, but they dont, because its safe to just keep on earning from steam, instead of putting in the time and money for a game that most of the fans are too old to play anyway.

PEOPLE DIED WAITING FOR HALF LIFE 3
>>
>>379010997
You've answered your own question, anon.

Valve is still widely remembered as that amazing game company that can do now wrong. So was Blizzard.

Blizzard decided to keep making games, and see where that got them. Diablo 3 was DOA and they're still trying to fix it, Starcraft 2 failed to meet expectation and has only been kept alive by spacing out expansions for years.

All Valve has been coming out with is shinier versions of old games and hired on community projects. Stuff that's inoffensive and doesn't really tarnish their reputation if it fails.
>>
>>379009409

Is Wolpaw still doing Psychonauts?
>>
>>379010997
Why make millions when you can make billions? Steam is more profitable in any given month than any game. You're too stupid to get that because you'd break it down in dollars when it's a matter of percentages. Low upkeep compared to return. That doesn't happen with games, it happens with services.

Remember when CSGO first came out and you could still access the cvars to load up spraylogos and enable them for a custom server, then valve hard-coded it all out, and then a few years later started selling sprays? Good times

Also remember when steampipe update pretty much killed the sourcemodding community by breaking fucking everything to the point where entire mod teams ditched source in favor of UDK?
>>
>>379011896

You're so full of shit, holy fuck. Take Two kept throwing money at them for 12 fucking years until they had to act legally and snatch it from them and send it to gearbox, where games go to die.
>>

>tfw The golden age of pc gameing is over
>>
>>379011503

> Starcraft 2 failed to meet expectation and has only been kept alive by spacing out expansions for years.

Expansions are not what keeps it alive, it's the community.

The only reason Starcraft got so much publicity in the 90's is because it was one of the best and smoothest RTS games available while the PC game market was also much smaller. Also RTS was a hot game back then... now MOBA style are the popular game.

Valve is just milking their player base because the ESports thing blew up for CS:GO and DoTA2.

They are too comfortable and lazy to take risks apparently.

Blizzard seems to rotate their games. They haven't touched WoW in months but have been updating their other games more often.
>>
>>379012410
While 3D Realms did get money thrown at them, Broussard and 3DR footed the bills in the early days, they didn't need Take Two's money until many years later into development and that's a partial reason for the infamous development schedule. They just didn't have to give a fuck due to a lack of pressure.

Critical acclaim? Whether you hate Overwatch, the game has sold like hotcakes and is doing remarkably well.

>has only been kept alive by spacing out expansions for years.

That's been Blizzards model since the early 2000's.

>Stuff that's inoffensive and doesn't really tarnish their reputation if it fails.

This is a flawed argument. If this were the case Valve would've never bothered making Half-Life 2. By all means they didn't have to. The success of Counter Strike and the strong sales of the original kept it going that they could have easily just skipped it selling Team Fortress 2 and focusing completely on Steam.

That's not why I or many of the original fanbase fell in love with Valve 16+ years ago.

Two primary colors? On the SAME TIE? What are they, barbarians?
>>
>>379013534

>They did have more than a couple of rewrites due to engine upgrades.

It wasn't upgrades as much as it was entirely new engines. It went from Quake 2 engine to Unreal engine. I have no fucking clue why they'd do that. They knew shit was evolving fast and that with their small dev team they wouldn't be able to keep up with creating a game within the amount of time something new comes out.
>>
>>379012127

>Steam is more profitable in any given month than any game.

This is not why people fell in love with Valve 10-20 years ago. This goes against everything Gabe spouted in the late 90's and mid 2000's. The fact is, Valve got popular because their fanbase came first and foremost and that making games was something they wanted to do.
