What are we supposed to be looking at?
>>
>>378980073
Yes it is.

There's currently in camps
1) People who think it is one of the best games ever made.
2) People who think the game is pretty good but have issues with the game's minor faults or design choices.
3) People who dislike it because it's too much of a deviation from the types of tropes they want in a Zelda game
4) People who are absolutely ass blasted and live a state of seething rage and denial that Nintendo could have possibly dared to make another good game.
>>
>>378981797
Me on the left in number 2
>>
>>378981797
Put me in camp #1. This is the game I have wanted all my life.
>>
>>378981797

>>
It looks pretty good but is there a way to change filter or something? landscapes seem to have some annoying film over them, colors aren't vivid
>>
>>378980073

The landscapes are so interesting and varied, my only issue is the the enemies within them are not. I wish this game a much larger variety of enemies and bosses, it would more than make up for the dungeon aspect.
>>
The world's consistency kind of falls apart when you find out there's Guardians roaming near stables and shit. There's also a Bokoblin camp right outside Lurelin village with nothing to stop them from invading. They don't even have guards patrols.
>>
>>378982441

these screenshots remind me of Dragon's Dogma when it was a PC exclusive. Like yeah the art direction is good and it's a solid game, but DEAR CHRIST is the visual fidelity terrible. I mean that fucking resolution man, holy fuck.
>>
>>378982441
If you are playing on switch, the colour mode is set to limited range.

If you go into the system settings and change it to FULL range you should immediately see a more vibrant game. Sounds really obvious but you would be amazed how many switch owners are still on the default colour setting.
>>
>>378982582
The actually DO invade. The locals are sick of it. One of the side quests from the village is for you go and kick their asses.
>>
>>378981797
2.5, the faults aren't minor, and the "tropes" existed for a reason and were just replaced by other much more inferior tropes.
>>
>>378983086
But they just come back after a blood moon and no one ever mentions it.
>>
>>378983108
The game doesn't have a single MAJOR fault. Only minor nitpicks blown out of proportion by people who desperately want there to be something wrong with the game.

The tropes have been getting stale. Everyone was getting bored and wanted something fresh. Nintendo were damned if they do, damned of they don't.

Poor difficulty curve is one in my opinion, while past Zeldas have been fairly easy throughout Breath of the Wild starts out pretty challenging but then plateaus hard unless you impose self limitations.
>>
>>378983380
Wouldn't a major fault be that it has so many minor ones that keep it from being perfect
>>
>>378980842
Just Cause 2 probably did that best.
>>
>>378980842
>>378983606
Nah Xenoblade X did it best. Doesn't re-use assets between regions like BOTW does, either.
>>
>>378982543
I agree with this, the other thing is that you don't get a wide array of tools like you do in a link to the past for example. That was the one thing I missed the most from this zelda.
>>
>>378983380
Wrong
>>
>>378983691
>the other thing is that you don't get a wide array of tools like you do in a link to the past for example.
But this game gives you more ways to deal with enemies than past Zelda games, so I don't see the problem.
>>
>>378982745
That's not what the game looks like. The screenshot function on the switch really fucks the resolution for some reason. Even worse when exported to twitter or whatever

Reminds me how boring the game is and how little content there is.
Cool areas, but boring everything else, along with shit story and music.
>>
>>378980073
I found the world very bland. Just a mass of emptiness with patches of quality applied onto the void. Those patches are nice but the emptiness is substantial.

There is a lot of good things about the game but some sort of rich detailed world with a lot of visual depth is not one of them.
>>
>>378983380
I think having no content is a major fault.
No gear progression, no gadgets or legit good puzzles, too much space between areas.

Weapon breaking is also an annoyance.

The game also runs and looks like shit.

I feel like these are pretty major. Most games would be blasted for this stuff.
>>
>>378983691
That I don't agree with. You have way more toys and environmental factors to play with and the depth of those interactions is unparalleled. The flexibility of say, attaching octoballons to things, and the way it synergizes with the Korok Leaf or campfires or stasis creates so many unique effects.

Compare that to LttP where a fourth of your inventory redundantly stuns enemies.

What I meant is that it's extremely situational and usually not worth it anyway. I mean, you don't even need to be this far up the sky for the slow-mo, just jumping off the horse is enough. In case you even need the slow-mo.

And you have to approach the Guardian from behind without it noticing you. The webm makes it look like he is doing it mid-fight which of course would be way cooler. Mid-fight it's almost impossible.

No since it looks the same everywhere, is generic, has no love for detail at all and when you actually played it, you immediately feel how soulless it is. Can't interact with anything. Literally the whole game is just an orange field without an art direction.

Not true, battling a guardian in horse is way easier than anything, the guardian has a hard time beaming you unless you are really really close (still it won't be a direct hit) and you will always crit as long you have the horse running, so cutting the guardian's legs is easier.

Souls is pure trash, though, so better not. You can't even climb a fucking fece. Even The Surge is better but reviewers give it lower scores because they won't get torn apart by fanboys when they do it.

This isn't part of any of the big pictures, it has low quality, is a cherry-picked random location you never have to check out and HUD is on. Also no grass when 90% of the world has ridiculously dense grass.
>>
>>378989641
Item gathering is better than the randomized glowing dots of XCX. The story is better (even though both stories are pretty bad, Zelda is at least not intrusive with its story). Physics are amazing, XCX didn't even have collision detection on most objects. Likewise, Zelda has far more interaction with the environment. Zelda also gives you more tools to be creative with, and has a wider gameplay loop while XCX just has RPG combat + exploration. Zelda in comparison has cooking, mount taming, climbing, ect in support of its exploration and combat mechanics.

Wind Waker does and always did look like complete shit. It never went far enough with cel-shading since it doesn't extend the environments and the lighting is unbelievably flat and unappealing.

WWHD also looks like shit but at least they recognized how bad the lighting always was and tried to do something to make it more vivid.

BotW finally and effortlessly realizes everything WW set out to do and failed horribly at.

yeah putting 5 random ingredients is pot and getting a restaurant quality dish pop up cooking alright.

affinity system by repeated spamming one button combination is taming alright.

waiting and waiting 10 hours to get to the top of a mountain using the stamina glitch is immersive realistic gameplay alright

slower witchtime with flurry rush is high end technical gameplay at it's finest, alright

Endgame: NA

3 flaws. End game, VO, and music. Everything else falls between excellent and perfect. I do think this is edged out by Wind Waker, but everything about it is so good, its up there with the very best of the series.

Bosses were well designed, but should have been more different looking/not just Ganon. Should have been Ghoma, Mold Worm, etc. Some Zelda staple bosses. But thats literally an opinion. Ganon fight was fun if not a bit on the easy side compared to the difficulty curve of the rest of the game, and I would have liked to see a Gerudo Ganon in this game, but you can't get everything. overall 9/10

>I wish the master sword better
The game would be retarded with a constantly useful master sword. This is a complaint made by people who just want to play OOT for a fifth time.
>I wish there wore more enemy variety
Valid complaint. Although it's worth noting how good the enemy AI is, and how common emergent gameplay is during combat. Both of these largely pick up the slack
>I wish it didn't look washed-out
I wish retards would stop demanding that the game be oversaturated.
>I wish ganon had a better final form/was human
Human Ganon has been done a million times, it's tired. Ganons first form was truly pretty damn terrifying. Second form was shite though.
>I wish your pals weren't dead
They needed more memories to properly flesh out the Champions but them being dead is an excellent plot decision. If anything the fact that Zelda is alive is the big disappointment of the plot.
>I wish most of the shrines didn't look the same
Visual diversity would have been nice but outside of the combat shrines there's actual content diversity and I'd much rather have that at the end of the day. Combat shrines needed more robots/the big robots/and better arenas though. (And we needed the small Guardians in the world)

>yeah putting 5 random ingredients is pot and getting a restaurant quality dish pop up cooking alright.

The question was what Zelda does better than XCX. Using items you gather that you actually collect from specific locations to create something is miles better than RNG items from glowy resource points that do nothing but fill up an encyclopedia.

>affinity system by repeated spamming one button

Better than XCX affinity system with party members, which just raises automatically based on hours of grinding with that party member. To make things worse, hours of this grinding is required to progress through the main story.

>waiting and waiting 10 hours to get the the top of a mountain using the stamina glitch

What stamina glitch? and why would I want to use it when it only takes 5-15 minutes of stamina management to reach the top of even the highest mountains and cliffs?

>slower witch time with flurry rush is high end technical gameplay

Requires more skill and timing than MMO combat with literal QTE stat boosts, that's for sure.

I'm a mix of 1,2, and 3, but fall mostly in 2. I absolutely love the game, and it has a feeling of "go anywhere, do anything" that surpasses any other open-world game I've ever played. However I do have issues with some of the design choices, such as the weapon damage system being a bit too punishing, and I'm not a huge fan of the shrines. They're okay, but I would have rather they skipped them in return for more larger dungeons. They could have had stuff like the forest temple and other famous Zelda dungeons scattered all over the world just waiting to be found. If they had done that, they I would absolutely say this is one of the greatest games ever made.

Do we know what Hard mode will include yet? Because if you just don't upgrade your armor you already get one-shotted by basically everything, and those centaurs take half your inventory to bring down. Not sure what a Hard mode could change unless they add annoying crap like starvation.

The content was really anticlimactic by its utterly lack luster reward system.

Saving the dragon was so fuckin bad ass, I loved it, I was so stoked to to see what happened when I gave an offering to the goddess after completing it.... a fuckin shrine? That's it? Shrines literally are just laying around on the side of the road when this game starts, should have given me a wood dildo if it wanted me to go fuck myself so bad.

I understand the point of exploration isn't always loot but the game seems constantly rewarding the player for exploring with totally trash boring rewards.

"You discovered the King's Private study in the final area of the game, and a chest with.... 300 rupees!"

Gee thanks game, I would have honestly rather it have no chest at all. I always think I discovered something cool/interesting only to realize this game is full of chests that hold garbage.

And the reward for reaching the King's study is reading the King's diary. People need to accept that BotW is not an RPG and is not about the loot. The reward is exploring the world. The world is there to give you something to seek out and explore, not to give you a chest full of loot.

Take a picture of someone else's copy of botw or the fact that I can easily download the game and play it on either CEMU or my hacked WiiU. I really wish you'd stop pretending you actually think a picture will prove any thing other than what it actually proves. Until you can come up with an actual response you're best not to reply and just cut your losses.

I'm not the one you responded to earlier bud. I just find it laughable that you want to play an extremely casual game (nothing wrong with that) for the difficulty. BoTW is an experience. And I know I sound like a marketer when I say that. But it's just that. It's not supposed to be difficult. you're not supposed to get all the 120 thingies either. But people play the game that way because they can't handle actual difficult games.

Weapon damage is perfectly fine. Its all about your mindset. Once you realize that weapons don't actually matter or that combat isn't necessary (and that's not a bad thing), you stop stressing yourself out over when your weapon breaks and you start chucking it at moblins faces.

But I agree that Shrines suck, only because half of them feel half assed. The few good shrines in the game are overshadowed by the amount of brain dead single room puzzles and "blessing" shrines where all you do is walk forward a few steps. Way too many shitty shrines in the game when only 50 of them are actually rewarding to do.

BotW has more content and sidequests than any Zelda game. In Zelda game the reward for sidequests is usually always a heart piece or rupee - which is exactly what you get in BotW, the heart pieces have been replaced by spirit orbs but it's the same thing.

BotW has plenty of content. People just desperately want to find a flaw and so straws shall be clutched at!

BoTW is not like every other zelda. Its an open world to explore, often this exploration leads to some really interesting content. This content is cheapened by there half assed attempt at loot.

They should have made armor peices the rewards of the more epic content.

-Permanent

Its got content. Its just a shallow game. This game is about as deep as link can swim.

Crafting is crazy formulaic.
The ingredients are formulaic.
The weapons are formulaic.
The armor is cool but you get 80% of it with rupees.

Oh I found a "insert (sneaky, mighty, swift, hearty, defensive, electric, fire, cold, stamina) Insert (snail, bug, shroom, plant, lizard, fish, crab)"

Its not obvious for the first few hours then you start to realize how shallow this game actually is.

Apply the exact same shit to weapons as well.
>>
>>378990126

Look straight down and tell me how the grass looks, homo
>>
>>378997169

But there are armor pieces as rewards. Rubber, Barbarian and Climber sets can only be gotten from shrines.

And why are people so booty blasted about the loot? I can understand in a dungeon crawling rpg where the loot is literally the driving force of the game but its the opposite in BotW. The loot is really fucking shit in Morrowind too, except for a few spots where you can get an early Daedric weapon, which then cheapens the entire game if you get it early. Same thing happens in BotW, except the weapon breaks and your power level stays relative to the enemies you fight.

X's combat is far superior to the original's. The story is also amazing. It borrows heavily from Western literature, particularly books like Beyond Good & Evil, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, The Prince, and Plato's Republic,
while also posing its own philosophical questions as to the nature of man, as in,
what constitutes life, what constitutes sentient life, and the human spirit. It's much, MUCH better than the generic shonen plot of Xenoblade Chronicles. However, it's too high-minded for the average gamer, so most people look at the lack of plot beats as bad story telling
>>
>>378997589
I agree. No reward needed. If I give a friend a ride home because I'm a nice guy and they say "Hey thanks for the ride, here's 50 cents!"

They should have just kept the 50 cents. It ruined the whole experience.

Granted this is an extreme example, giving 3 diamonds didn't ruin the whole thing, I just thought it came off as thoughtless. It could have been anything unique or interesting or even nothing at all but 3 diamonds feels so cheap.

BotW gets a pass because of the sheer amount of ways an enemy fight can play out. Even after clearing 100 camps, you can still be surprised by the AI. Like when I found out that moblins would pick up bokoblins and use them as shields or throw them at you.

However, I do think the enemies in X are superior. There's a load of difference between a Xern, an Auravis, an Ovis, and Saltat, from the way you have to approach them to their combat mechanics. It's not really noticeable unless you don't fight enemies drastically stronger than you, however. On my second playthrough of the game, I actually had to temper my build around the area I was going to, because I didn't grind out any exp at all.

Full immunity is extremely rare, but there are even more than 1/5th of the total number of enemies that also have reflects, or 80 - 95 resistance to elements.

but then everyone would complain that rupees were meaningless and that the game economy is broken like they did for the past 5 Zelda games.

I'm all for more interesting rewards for shrines, don't get me wrong- but there are 120 shrines and only so many unique rewards you can have before you have to start recycling stuff. Ideally, I think the shrines should have been combined so that there were a total of 50 shrines. Each being about 3x longer than the shrines we have now. We don't need 120 fast travel points. 50 is more than enough.

Remove shrines from stables, remove shrines from town entrances. Have shrines only be hidden in the wilderness, often guarded by a riddle (the riddle shrines will be the entrances to the new, larger and combined shrines instead of just collecting a reward for solving a riddle).

>but what about fast travel
Fuck fast travel, I never liked it much anyway. I am in favor of removing it from the game entirely actually. Maybe give me one recall point with that medallion from the DLC, but other than that force me to plan my journeys. The power creep would be less significant if you actually had to expend the resources you gather on journeys instead of just warping somewhere.

Make the towers be the only fast travel points if they really need to stay.

So how about rewards?
Make ancient weapons 'permanent' weapons like the master sword. They still break, but you go to the tech lab in akkala and spend the resources and money to repair them, not make them. You have to find them as rewards from shrines first. Same goes for the Ancient Armor- you get the pieces in the Shrines, but they start busted so you have to take them to akkala for repair.

So far as shrine rewards we have:

>Ancient sword
>Ancient Spear
>Ancient Buzzsaw
>Ancient Bow
>Ancient Helm
>Ancient Cuirass
>Ancient Greaves
>Barbarian head
>Barbarian torso
>Barbarian Legs
>rubber head
>rubber torso

That's exactly why, Nintendo haveto account for poor fags with shitty TVs. I still think it should be part of the system set-up - the first you start the system, set the fate and time and create a profile, it should automatically detect your TV or ask you which colour settings you want. There's probably millions of switch owners oblivious to the fact they're playing on the default colour settings and complaining that the games look washed out.

There are two kinds of 10/10s: games with a limited scope that are master-crafted and polished to a mirror-shine like your Marios and Zeldas, and games that get by on the strength of their vision and ambition like the best CPRGs. BotW manages to be both, although it's the former more than the latter.

I literally bought Chronicle after finishing BotW because I was itching for more open world and only own a Wii U and PC, and I couldn't stand the first hour and a half of it. Does it get better than ridiculously out of place stereotypical anime girls (sexy war hero girl, cute prodigy loli girl, I have to assume it continues operating at this level) and a confused aesthetic with the most generic, contrived scifi plot possible? I honestly barely got a chance to PLAY it at all before the plot had completely turned me off along with the characters whose visual designs were so jarringly out of place in the aesthetic of the world they created I couldn't actually believe it, but every time I open up a BotW thread it is people spamming about how good XCX is, so I am trying really hard to work myself up to a second attempt.

>>
>>379002441
Oh ok. I see what you are getting at. Let me clarify.

Near a tree being one of the best places to take a shit in the woods does not mean its one of the best places to take a shit period. The initial statement had parameters to make it "true". Its validity is critical to the existence of the parameters. No one thinks shitting by a tree is one of the best places to shit, only in the context of being in the woods does this statement become marginally true.

Thinking zelda has been a disappointment in its past few iterations isn't exactly ground breaking either. Lots of people think that.

The series has been falling in line with a trend in gaming to make everything more and more obvious, player friendly, mass appeal. Sure I think arguements could be made this is all a good thing but look what happened with Diablo 3. Fans were annoyed with what made the original series interesting has been sanded away in lieu of a more measured and tailored experience.

Yes botw is a huge leap forward for the series but that doesn't take way from the fact that it is shallow and formuliac in...
Enemies
weapons
rewards
collectible ingredients
hell even shrines them selves get pretty repetitive.

Okay sure but all of those are subjective. Not everyone likes the weapon system, some love it, some hate it. Is it broken? Honestly? No it works fine.

Puzzles? Entirely subjective. People of all ages will play this game. Nintendo are an *AND* company.

Plus I buy the gear progression. You mean the armour? Some it takes a fair amount of effort and exploring to properly upgrade and much of it is worth it - upgrading climbing gear to climb faster, zora armour to swim faster and so on.

Some might be miffed but they're more minor nitpicks than MASSIVE GAME BREAKING FAULTS.

No open world game has ever had more then 6 major types of enemeis? Moblin guys, Lizard guys, bokoblin guys, chuchus, guardians and bats.

People complaining the weapon durability are just looking at the system from the wrong perspective.

You're SUPPOSED to be constantly changing your weapons out for new stuff. Playing 200 hours with the same weapon would get boring pretty fast.

Instead of running into a fight like fucking lunatic and mashing the attack button, the player is forced to think.

You have to size up the situation, pick a tactic - do you get rid of the lookouts first before they can alert the others? Can you sneak into the camp and steal their weapons before they can arm themselves? Will you nuke the strongest enemy of the camp with bomb arrow? Can you set fire to anything? Use traps to thin out the numbers? Use the environment against them? Use your runes to crush them?

And then there's the weapon system itself, which is focused around the classic sword/spear/axe triangle (the fire emblem series is literally built around this concept).

Each weapon also has elemental variations and also specific weapons which are strong against certain foes, like the gaurdian weapons. And then there's other types like, boomerangs and bow and arrows. It's fairly diverse without being overwhelmingly complicated.

You can use your map to set pins on your map where weapons were found and simply return every blood moon and restock.

So many people are complaining about a mechanic which actually forced them to think, to organise, to analyse, to evaluate and strategise each fight and they don't even realise it. Nor did they appreciate how much more engaging that is than button mashing.

Never mind the realisation that the weapon durability is tied into the themes and subtext of the game - it's YOU vs THE WORLD, it's literally a survival game. Nintendo design BotW to take Zelda fans out of their comfort zone, to constantly feel underpowered and always on the backfoot. The first weapon you get in the game is a stick.

That's what the CEMU version looks like

Assassins creed? Climbing is all over the gaming industry. They did it best by not making specific climbable objects. Hardly mind blowing. Dat rain though....

Blowing yourself.... yeah it had some broken physics and a boat that reacted to wind. Not mind blowing that's just how sailing works. Have you played wind waker?

Well the missions do have vague or sometimes specific compass points. This is not the first game you have had to figure shit out using environmental land marks, have you played red dead redemption? It came out 7 years ago. You should try it.

further to your point, there's a difference between adding to a genre and redefining it. time will tell if botw will be that or its own genre entirely, I fully believe it could be either.
>>
>>379006381
>The game doesn't follow any of the same tired tropes of past open world games
>towers
>ability to set waypoints
>fast travel
>crafting
>gathering mushrooms/plants
>hunting
>pretending the sheikah slate DOESN'T dude it has plenty of the open world staples. don't fucking pretend
the thing is they do some things better. breath of the wild isn't even the first open world game with climbing. assassin's rehash did it years ago. it's not the first game with wind, it's not the first game with fire you can spread across grass. it's not the first game where you can utilize the environment to find your way. shit, gta had that.
>reeee you hate zelda kys sonybro
man you'd probably shit the bed if i tried informing you that mario 64 wasn't the first 3d platformer too.

I gave them. The exploration mechanics and the world design.

There isn't a single video game anywhere which gives the player such an unparalleled amount of freedom and options to fashion their own solutions to explore. The actual mechanics of climbing any surface and gliding is liberating and the exhilaration of exploration is unmatched. Do you have any idea how monumentally difficult and complicated it is to code a seamless world with that kind of freedom and not have the whole thing come crashing down? And that's not even taking into account the amount of other game play mechanics heaped on top.

Consider how the weather, the climate and the environment are all intricately connected - informing the player's choice and, in turn, influencing how the player interacts with the enviroment. It's insanely impressive. Nintendo coded a living breathing world of consequence. What they achieved, on the tech they used, is astonishing.

How did you get the render distance up in CEMU, grass only appears within 10 feet of Link for me
>>
>>379006941
AC did everything first, but its execution was terrible. the amount of extra work needed to do it right is what defines these elements, and no one had done it before. that's pretty defining, even if it isn't outright genre defining.

Super liberating! Came out a couple years ago. I think you got this confused with BOTW. Here you go buddy.
>>
>>379007214
>even if it isn't outright genre defining
then why the fuck have you been attempting to argue that breath of the wild might as well be a different genre
you even fucking said it doesn't follow any of the same tired tropes of past open world games when it DOES
jesus christ, anon, I get that you want to defend a game you like but don't just spout biased bullshit
>>
>>379007262
That is absolutely nothing compared to what BotW has going on. Absolutely NOTHING. You genuinely have to be a moron to bring Just Cause to table as an argument.

It's obvious you haven't got the slightest grasp of what game design actually involves.
>>
>>379007049
10/10 poem though. You should write wedding vows.
>>
>>379007412
it only technically follows the tropes, is what i've been trying to say. the game is so different it's not even worth trying to compare the two.
>>
>>379007214
>AC did everything first
It wasn't the first.
>>
>>379007517
On the subject of liberating movement?
Yeah, you haven't played it have you?
>>
>>379007517
You don't even get a grappling hook in botw. How does it even compare?
>>
>>379007626
Yes and I don't recall having the entire game completely unbarred and being able to climb every surface.
>>
>>379007749
BotW has loli fish tits. Your move.
>>
>>379007626
Why are you still replying to him? He's the type of person who'd shit on Shenmue and GTA despite how they influenced the genre simply because they're not Breath of the Wild, which he himself stated does not feature a single trope from an open world game.

Those towers that reveal the map? Completely original. Mounts? No games had that before Breath of the Wild. Breath of the Wild invented climbing and crafting. What? His point was that Breath of the Wild did some of these things better? Then why didn't he say that instead of parading about like it single-handedly changed everything?
>>
>>379007576
You have been trying to say it was the FIRST to do so many things. Mic dropping genre revolutionizing blah blah blah.

Stop moving your fucking goal posts everytime someone makes a good argument against you.

bye thread.

OP, next time don't shitpost for so long. Just post the pretty images and leave.
>>
>>379007925
I didn't mention any of that. I simply said some elements of BotW are next level.

There isn't a single open world game going forward which won't be compared to BotW. Deal with it.
>>
>>379008126
>OP, next time don't shitpost for so long. Just post the pretty images and leave.
I posted the first 2 pics alone.

I don't have a problem with that, retard. Quit thinking everyone pointing out your biased stupidity is out to get your game.

Well I hope the next game is...
Difficult
in depth
and has a variety of enemies.

Guess you would have to call that REVOLUTIONARY!!!!!
>>
>>379008310
And yet what? My issue was with you saying BotW didn't follow open world tropes. It does (which is fine).
It also handles them better (which is fine). I have no problems with the actual game.
