Why isn't there at least an effort to make a game where animations are good so you feel like hits are connecting and not having *smack* magic blink upon which character flies away / becomes ragdoll for a second? Just one innovation? And not to mention Injustice where characters behave as if pulled on steel cables into place. They are just abysmal from a technical standpoint. That's before going into minutiae like bruises, blood, reworking of health system, combos etc. Only thing that's happening right now is the monetization so you actually have to buy characters AFTER buying the game and then you have these memetransactions so you have Akuma smacking Ryu with kappaface while wearing hard gay outfit.

You're sort of right but UFC games mainly sell brand and their innovation is more of a mimicry without much thought put into balance or anything akin to that.

Thats because a realistic fighting game would not be "balanced" at all just like real life. There as certainly effective technuiqes in various martial arts, but fighters are bot born equeal, they just aren't. So games like EA's UFC don't sit well with traditional fighting game crowds because thry get mad if there is not some 100% guarenteed expectation with good technuiqe.
