Should I give any DK games a shot?

the country games are all very good, you have to give 1, 2 and tropical freeze a shot
idk anything about 3, it's probably good though

SNES games are fucking classic. I enjoy them more than the mario games.
Ironically though, I'm not a big fan of Returns, but I like the mario bros U game. People tend to fawn over dong freeze on wii u.

But yeah, play Donkey Kong Country 1-3. 1 has the best atmosphere and is probably the most memorable as individual pieces, 2 is the pinnacle, having the best gameplay, and 3 is the black sheep that everyone hates but me for some reason. I think it has great art and fun levels.

I was baiting a little bit with the plastic thing but I do find it a tad soulless. I don't like it though, I wish they kept going with the DKC gameplay rather than NSMBing it up for DKCR and freeze. Its a good platformer but It's not what I want when I think donkey kong country. I know i'm a minority. Whatever.

I do wish they used a different art style though. Seems in gamecube it went on to become cartooney, but the whole point of the SNES games were realistic graphics with the pre-rendered backdrops and sprites and what not. Wish they would have continued down the more "realistic" path for Donkey Kong rather than the cartooney approach they took for the revamps. Obviously not a photo-realistic gorilla out there jumping around, but I would have preferred an updated version of pic related rather than the disney looking aesthetic they have now.


Idk, it's hard to get my point across because it's not that the old style was realistic as in a jungle, but it was hyper realistic for the SNES. The games now look like a CGI dreamworks movie or something. Just wish they kept that unique donkey kong charm for the visuals.

Oh yeah to add to this rambling post (sorry meds make me type a lot) I also really don't like how in DKCR and even NSMB for that matter, you play 2 player at the same time. That's not how these kinds of platformers should work. The most fun part of DKC was getting with some buds and playing the really hard jumping levels like the mine carts where you had to be precise, then fucking up, and having your friend instantly tag in and finishing. It added tension. I don't like the whole thing of having two playable characters on screen at once for these kinds of platformers. It ruins the one shot jumps you used to get from having to cross on things like vultures or other floating enemies, because there has to be a second way for the 2nd player to get across. Ruins the sense of "one shot, no turning back now" kinda level design the SNES games had. Granted I've only played Tropical Freeze out of the DKCR series.

Nice to see an actual opinion this time.
In my opinion, the backgrounds look gorgeous for what they are, and it comes down to preference for how you want them to look. It does indeed look cartoony, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I understand this complaint far more. It doesn't ruin the game, but it is unfortunate that they didn't have separate options for people who preferred the old style of multiplayer.
However, I don't feel that they did compromise the sense of oneshot jumps - the way that the player lagging behind catches up is that they can bounce on an enemy in its death animation.

Yeah i don't know why that irks me but I wish it was the more personal balloons in the shapes of their heads again. The idea of having more than 2 playable characters is kinda ok I guess, but I feel like it'd work better in a tag team style game like the old games where you choose 2/3-4 kongs before the game starts based on the area. Maybe im jaded idk but I dont love tropical freeze like everyone else.

I'm pretty sure in TF if you play single play you get diddy on donkey's back and it's a shared life bar, diddy has a jetpack so in 2 player he can make longer jumps but in single player donkey gets that ability by having diddy on his back. There may be a way to swap though, it's been a long time since i played it.

Kinda a shame for me because I just like the way Diddy 'feels'/controls in DKC 1 and 2

But I am aware it is Donkey Kong's game so it's not unreasonable that they would expect me to play him.

In what capacity is Dixie controlled in TF? Same way as Diddy (secondary support monkey)?

What are the odds they'll ever port Tropical Freeze to Switch /v/? It came out at a time when I had no money and a broken Wii U.
