its just on shitty crt tv's the card stats were fucking terribly hard to read

and the cards can "grow" every time you win you get a small chance a card will upgrade
Although there is a tad bit of randomness to your cards stats when they battle as the attack/defense can have a +/- of around 10 or so if i recall correctly each time they battle but I prefer it as it makes you have to wager the odds and not just faceroll with OP cards like 8 had

I think 4's characters are more stupid than 8's, including the orphanage twist. They're both driven by the same kind of writing, "write whatever makes the plot fit most conveniently". Except 8 has more characterization, so even though it is stupid, it's more believably stupid. You can't seriously think that Irvine being too shy to ask them if they were in the same orphanage as him is as ridiculous as Cid going out of his way to jump off the ship WITH a bomb to plug the hole to the surface instead of just throwing the bomb itself just because the developers wanted a way to get him out of the party. Hell, the game even makes fun of itself by having a fake-out death scene played for comedy with Cid after that.
