Megaman for the most part. Even X 6 and after aren't even that bad, just worse than the previous. Mainline was great, X was also fun, Battle network was one of my all time favorite series, Starforce was a step down but not bad, etc

IX is an amazing game, it tries to create a different story than all other DQs and ends up making a great one, some of the "filler" is amazing like the antissocial guy who decides to befriend everyone in the village after his wife dies or the girl that died but everyone things she's alive travelling the world because her doll took her place for some time.

The villains and themes are also better than in other dragon quest games and I really liked the NPCs.

And I know a lot of people don't like about the lack of a party, but honestly it does give a sense of loneliness to the story and atmosphere. It's just you and the fairy alone on a journey to save the world.

And the best part I think is the customization, some of the item designs are amazing, Dragon Warrior set is probably my favorite armor in any game.

DQIX is a tier above all other DQ games.

Why fix what isn't broken? It's not as if combat is the selling point for JRPGs.

You play them to experience the world and setting through a character's eyes. Dragon Quest succeeds by making a very colorful and vibrant world in each installment that gives the player incentive to explore and continue playing. The fact that Enix never cared to potentially undermine Dragon Quest by changing the combat goes to show that they care enough about the audience.

Because it starts to become repetitive and tiring.

The world design, enemies designs, NPCs, soundtrack and exploration are fine, but the series has become really stagnant on certain points. For instance the story in these games have a big potential to being something good but it's simple and underdeveloped, the combat is the same in every single game apart from some minor changes through the ages and it has very little strategy to it. The games are also very easy, I don't think I ever died on Dragon Quest IX. The dungeon designs are terrible.

The series needs shake ups in some parts but the developers are too afraid of change for some reason. Shoving all the archaic and bad things about those games under "traditionalism" is just really wrong and deals more damage to this series than you think.

Intro was okay, but the difficulty falls off a cliff by the time you get to Tokyo and never picks back up. The gameplay was heavily casualized.

I didn't play IV:A but I doubt it's any better.

The devs are afraid of their target audience. Nips are fucking terrifying when something long-standing changes the formula in a massive way (see Kamen Rider fans and that one guy who snapped a VN CD in half because vanilla was falsely advertised), but I digress.

Traditionalism exists for mostly DQ because of this. We've been given much better franchises to mix things up along the way in-between releases of DQ games like SaGa, Phantasy Star, etc. It shouldn't be a flaw being the most consistent franchise of JRPGs. It serves as a reminder of what consists of a good game despite what flaw present themselves each installment.

But I'm shitfaced off brandy right now, so my argument probably holds no water. You come off as a pretty reasonable guy who enjoys JRPGs as much as I do, even if it's in different ways. Let's just agree that we enjoy an excellent genre and hope for it's continued success in the future.

Japs are nuts, sure, but I don't think it applies here. If you have a fanbase that loves traditional gameplay, why would you change things drastically? DQ does have ups and downs in sales, but it's a long-running series, it's natural. And western fans received Chrono Cross super well, right? Fanbases don't like sudden changes.
Can't comment on Kamen Rider, but Elf had it coming with Kakyuusei 2. They went too far with it, as if they were spiting the readers for kicks.
