Who the fuck would buy a Dreamcast when a superior generation of systems was right around the corner?
It's the same fuckup Nintendo made when they released the WiiU. Maybe you can succeed with inferior hardware if you're a smash hit phenomenon like the Wii, but not if it's just a regular-ass video game console.

I owned a Dreamcast and the games were amazing but it had one fucking analogue stick and still used memory cards inserted in the back of the cotnroller.

But I will say, the Dreamcast itself is probably one of my favorite console designs ever, and that was made possible by the lack of memory card ports

It goes so much deeper than that. General lack of consumer confidence due to a weak brand after abandoning the 32X almost immediately and doing fuckall on the saturn (stateside anyway), the fact that the PS2 was just on the horizon and people were far more interested in that, piss easy piracy; it's not like the Dreamcast ate shit for one specific reason. It's a giant pile of a thousand things going wrong for a solid five or six years.

I never got this, people told me PS2's broke left and right but I dropped my PS2 down some stairs, dropped it a few more times, fucked up hopped out of bed and stomped on it once, and I still have that thing now. Had it since May 2002 and still runs perfectly. Slow as shit to boot a game but once it gets going it still runs like it's fresh.

GC was a big failure and the first time nintendo started to feel uncertain. They expected their usual customer base to lap everything up and then just shit out a few extra titles to pull in the rest. However the rest wanted more mature games and their first party lineup (they hate third party) was kinda shit. They went pretty insane trying to get the GC to sell.

Sega's past failures left them hemorrhaging money. While the Dreamcast was selling decently enough, it wasn't enough to keep Sega afloat so they had to pull the plug. Sega was in such financial trouble that former chairman Isao Okawa had given his own money to help keep the company afloat.

Remember that nintendo isnt really into the technical side of things. Thats why they tried to hook up with sony. And when that failed they stuck with the cartridge system for a long time, and afterwards didnt try to go for raw power.
Then you have to consider that consoles didnt sell on raw power. They seem to all have something extra. The PS1 delivers a CD player in addition to being a game console. The PS2 was a DVD player and a console, The Wii had waggle controls. Meanwhile the Xbox, which was the strongest console and put a lot of money towards getting exclusives, and got the best out of every multiplat, was struggling,the weak PS2 was doing great.

Nintendo constantly tries to make unique consoles, sometimes they strike gold, sometimes they fall flat on their face.

DreamCast didn't have the right games or DVD functionality that the largescale casual audience wanted.

Lack of brand loyalty and mainstream ignoring Sega Saturn.

Most kids had either Genesis or SNES, and unless they were pretty well informed or had someone buy it for them, they upgraded to the N64. Those who knew there were other options got a PS1. No one fucking knew what the Saturn was, you didn't see commercials for it, there weren't demos for it in stores. So when it came time for the Dreamcast, N64 owners got a PS2 or Gamecube, and PS1 owners got a PS2.

Funny enough that's why it sold so high. It had a large collection, but the overall quality was meh.
Gamecube was the most about the games.
Xbox was pushing online.
PS2 was a dvd player
Dreamcast was the earliest to come at the hardest road given it was stuck. It had a memory card gimmick that was cool on paper, sucks on the real. It had internet access at the time without good internet making the xbox come out right as the internet access was getting better. So it didn't shine there.
No one gave a shit about the PS2 internet access, because it was a dvd player.
Netplay on Gamecube no one gave a shit about, because it was all about the game quality and couch play.
The Dreamcast was the innovator that started all the major trends in one machine that other companies aspired to later. However this is what also killed the Dreamcast for it's time, because it didn't do many of those gimmicks well or it was at a time where those gimmicks weren't stable at all.

The ps2 broke constantly. I finally got ahold of sony as a kid and they told me turning it off by the power switch is like unplugging a computer from the power cord while it's still on and to properly turn the ps2 off, you simply hold the reset button. How the hell is anyone supposed to know that?

Fun fact: The Saturn sold more in Japan than the Dreamcast did. Enix was even debating putting Dragon Quest on the Saturn for awhile before finally settling on the PS1

I always wonder if DQ on the Saturn could've boosted it enough in Japan to garner more 3rd party titles that could've filtered over to the west

In the end, the dysfunction of Sega Japan/Sega US would've always ended in tragedy
