Imagine how many games Nintendo can keep making by justifying them being "somewhere in there".
It's the same stunt they pulled with Metroid. Ever since Fusion, they've been unable to make a game with any sort of conclusion to the story, so they just make side-stories that take place in the middle of the timeline.
It's fucking devilishly genius. They put any sort of continuation on hiatus for the sake of keeping a series alive.
