This game probably marks the end of Falcom's golden age btw. After Zwei 2 Falcom started to focus on mobile/console development and dropped the PC as a platform.

I like it more than Gurumin, the dungeons were pretty good and I remember that most of the NPC in town have a certain charm attached to it.
Doing a dance routine in order to learn new skills is also a pretty memorable experience for me in the game.
I recall there was even a colosseum mode, because I do remember fighting against some of the NPC.

That period arguably lasted through Ao no Kiseki, which still reflects their old PC market in most ways. 2012 brought us Nayuta and Ys: Memories of Celceta, both of which started catering harder to Falcom's current, younger market (though Nayuta's something of a successor to Zwei!! II).

>>378887701
It compares very well, and probably looks the best among their old polygonal 3D games. The art style lets them get away with low-poly models because environments, SFX, and the bestiary's more than solid, plus all those colors. Challenge level is good, the bosses are well-designed and have many phases, dungeon layouts are enjoyable...it's packed with lots of fun things, especially the dialogue (cast and NPCs) and music.

>>378888297
Yep, the editor said they licensed it to use as a base. So it's largely going to reflect the fan translation.

>>378888368
It's very interesting that XSEED's back to licensing fan translations, hopefully without any NightWolve stigma by now.

There's always the GPD Win, which plays all of Falcom's PC games well for the most part.

>>378891772
What the hell is Y's?

Yeah, this isn't too far off from mid-2000s Ys. Just don't expect as much raw challenge. The pace isn't quite as fast either, but on par with Xanadu Next (maybe quicker) and there's lots to fight. No extra difficulty modes either, but there's a bunch of optional bosses later on.

Yeah that's what I thought.
>>
>>378893140
They also have to get it ti work on Windows 10 it's going to require some decent programming work if they run into any problems.
>>
The translation took so long to come out that I was able to learn enough Japanese to play this and the first game. I'm excited to finally be able to recommend this to more people now that it will be in English.

>>378894062
Yep, and it would be worse getting Zwei!! to run on modern Windows, so they're going with something easier first.

>Zwei II Plus, the 3D action RPG from Falcom released for PC in Japan in 2009

Well at least it isn't a port of a 2009 console game. Just slap "Plus" at the end to make people think this is the definitive edition, nevermind the fact it's still the same 30FPS locked, 720p art asset using game (and NEITHER of these issues will be fixed). Just pay 20 bucks and shut up, enjoy being fed literal leftovers.
>>
>>378894632
>implying they won't unlock resolution and framerate
What's the hard evidence Sara @ XSEED won't do this? She might even be able to get better assets for illustrations and menus, too. Better to complain about Xanadu Next since that already had an English fan patch for a long time.

Madre de dios, the game's just been announced and only has a standard PR sheet. We'll learn more about Zwei!! II in English at E3, and I can't see XSEED skimping on tech upgrades when they're still adding new things to Trails FC/SC.
>>
>>378894632

What in the fuck are you talking about? I don't know if it can go over 60 but it at least does that from what I remember. Also Plus IS the definitive edition, it adds more stuff to the game.

>After Zwei 2 Falcom started to focus on mobile/console development and dropped the PC as a platform.

Gee, I wonder why a game made for non-PlayStation platforms released exclusively in a PlayStation dominated country didn't sell. This is why I hate the Japanese "video game industry", everything must be on the PlayStation GodStation to be successful. At least the west has a free market.

>>378895016

>re-release of a 2009 PC game
>with a fan translation patch slapped on top
>implying they'd actually put any more effort into for a game that will only sell 20K lifetime copies

The inevitable PS4 release will be the one that's all touched up, PC is just a guinea pig for Japanese publishers to test the viability of console remasters.
>>
>>378895251
They aren't using the fan patch itself, just the translation. And that means no technical conflicts that would force them to use the 2009 version as is. Sara knows how to fuck with old Falcom PC games enough now, so I can see her adding arbitrary resolutions, unlocking FPS, etc. XSEED puts effort into these otherwise cheap re-releases, even Xanadu Next which has expanded widescreen support.

Sara also would pressure XSEED to let her do this because it can adversely limit sales. FPS police on Steam would do plenty of harm spreading word around about a 30 FPS-locked Falcom game. XSEED already knows how important this kind of thing is, so I wouldn't lump them in with your average Koei-Tecmo.
>>
>Xseed
Lemme guess, dub only. Will still buy the game but hopefully therell be a Japanese voice patch
>>
>>378895251
Game is from 2008
>>
>>378895560
I'm sure she'll actually do that and isn't purely PR talk. And I bet Steam must be a super profitable platform for them to take great care with their ports. Whether it has a frame lock or not, Japshit games will only sell 30K copies @ $5 at best on PC. There's a reason why all developers, Japanese and western, focus on console and not PC. There's a reason why Japanese developers ignore PC entirely. It's just a growth that only survives because it's dependent on consoles.
>>
>>378895950
She's certainly not all talk. Falcom's even started selling the Steam version of Trails FC, with JP text, online because it makes so many technical improvements. The hardest thing aside from testing would be unlocking framerate, but fan hackers have done this to Celceta on PC already, so I think it's fair game for someone just as experienced.

>>378895950
The actual reason Falcom stopped making PC games is that their suppler who made the disks's and packaged the game went bankrupt.
>>
>>378896543

>Falcom's even started selling the Steam version of Trails FC, with JP text, online

Really? Is it just on JP Steam or is there somewhere else I can get it? When I get around to replaying the Sora games in Japanese it'll probably be the Evo versions but I'd like to keep an eye on wherever this is for some of their other games.
>>
>>378896664
Haven't heard about that, but SoftBank dropped them from physical PC game distribution (rather, they dropped that for everyone) in 2009, and Zwei!! II sold poorly compared to Trails 3rd and Ys Origin. So Falcom scrapped plans for a unique PC version of Ys Seven and started focusing on PSP titles already coming soon. Falcom games sell fine on Steam at the moment, and I think Zwei!! II can do many times the number of owners Xanadu Next currently has (based on release timing and Twitter/FB push, plus some actual E3 coverage).

>>378896945
Nah, places like DMM (where the games are usually on sale). Those versions don't have DRM, just in case you're worried.
>>
>>378897027
I imagine Xanadu Next did poorly do to everyone who wanted to play it played the fan patch years prior.
>>
>>378897217
That didn't help. Even so, a lot of people who would have bought and/or pirated it just don't know the game's officially out in English now. Zwei!! II doesn't have this problem anywhere near as much. It frankly looks more appealing to a lot of people at first sight, whereas Xanadu Next is harder to sell.
>>
>>378897027

I had assumed that those digital versions were just the original Japanese versions made to work with modern OSes. Also, looking at DMM, the screenshots are still 4:3. If they did indeed start using the improved version they aren't doing a good job of showing it.
>>
>>378897593
>If they did indeed start using the improved version they aren't doing a good job of showing it.

They aren't. These are just the original PC versions without XSEED's improvements.
>>
>>378897975
Damn, I must have misheard. Fixes for modern OSes is all Falcom does for their PC games these days it seems.
>>
>>378897975

So they aren't selling the improved PC version in Japan? I hear that you can take some files that contain the text from the Japanese version and insert them into the Steam version. I haven't done it but I imagine some text would remain in English or break since XSEED added extra features from the PSP/PS3 version. It's a shame that people in Japan who want to play it on PC get the worst version.

>Zwei 2
>two two
What's the deal with the name?
>>
>>378899443
Not that much, but there's more here than Gurumin. Either we're getting dub-only or, as has been rumored, the talent agency Falcom usually works with is more lenient with Western licensors now and has made a reasonable deal with XSEED for this game. That depends on where the Japanese VAs in Zwei!! II work at, of course.

>>378899735
Stupid pun. First came "X"anadu, then "Y"s, finally "Z"wei in 2001, and the sequel makes fun of this.

I'm not confident XSEED wants to pony up the money for a project this lean. But I hope they do it because they'd get nice press and attention for Illvard Insurrection.

DRM versions are nice.

What did he mean by this?
>>
>>378901789
Yeah, but it's a pain to get working even on Windows 7, and it's stuck at a low resolution because of old 2D visuals. Maybe there's HD versions Falcom could give XSEED, but I'm not expecting that.

>>378901830
Maybe they're including the first Zwei!! for "true believers" since the fan translator who gave XSEED the script had also finished Zwei!!. I think a bonus as big as this would help more than a standalone release that gets ignored. Nick just had to edit the script while Sara @ XSEED makes it run on Windows 10 and below. At most they'll add Xinput and some options for configuring OG Zwei!!.
