Probably 5 if I'm lucky enough to get a perfect stairs setup. I just started like a week ago. I've seen the guides, puyo trainer, chain simulator, etc, so I'm just complaining that I can't be instantly good, that's all.
I can of course make bigger chains than 5 in the chain simulator, but in game I'm not fast enough to figure out how to place things optimally.

When I can get to the later stages, it's usually the drop speed, but I lose on earlier stages more than I'd like to as well. Mostly because I don't get what I need for the stairs I'm trying to build, or because I try to transition to make a longer chain and fuck up and then the chain's trigger is blocked.

That's literally all they are doing in that video. Now, being stretched and wiggled helps a little, but even then, that's still literal VN-tier shit.
The only exceptions in that vid are Baldanders, Akuma, and Ocean Prince. Even then, that's just basic as shit tweens of broken body parts (which is better than nothing, but goddamn, at least do it for more than those characters).

It's a bit hard to think ahead because of the smaller next window in the first game, and transitioning to the second floor is pointless because you can't counter and chains larger than 5 are just for show. When beating 1 don't bother with that stuff. Just try to keep your field clean and go for 3-5 chains.

It's a bit like that in 2 as well, since the chaining power is skewed in 1player mode to be much stronger than usual and the ai will abuse this and spam.
