While being a totally despicable move, it's completely in line with nintendo's philosophy.
Nin want their games to be as enjoyable as possible: they always try to avoid any external disturbance, they keep down the general tone of both their games and social apps and oppose cyberbullism, in order to appeal to every gamer... and their parents.
Requiring a smartphone for voice chat give more control to parents on their child's playtime, and phisically stop any unwanted comunication. Only those with a personal smartphone (therefore, generally mature and responsable enough) will be free to chat.
While being certainely an unpleasant method and a complicance, it's also a comprehensible one, and a definitevely certain proof that the switch is a babby console and a child toy, suitable for youngsters or manchildren.

i only ever went online with a console once to see what the deal with gta online was(it sucked btw). the very first thing i did was figure out how to mute all voice chat because it sounded like an army of 13 year old chanting nigger vs another army of 13 year olds making dolphin noises. i'm not kidding. it was this constant earsplitting screeching mixed with the occasional racial slur through the shittiest quality mic i have ever heard in my life. i didn't have a headset so this was coming through on my surround sound, at ridicufuck volume, all on by default. i thought the stories on /v/ were just complete lies to get a rise out of people, like trolling about a good pc costing over $1,000, but no.

i guess what i'm trying to say is if you play online with a console you're a complete faggot, and if you voice chat with randos you're a double nigger

Long time Nintendo fan here. What a fucking joke, I can't believe what a goddamn mess this is.

To be completely fair I live in a small apartment where my PC is hooked up to my TV in my living room so I just use discord for EVERYTHING regardless of what I'm playing. Before I replaced my headset I would use my phone, which was nice because I could rest my PC when I wasn't using it, but I didn't have to have my goddamn phone connected to my console and could put that shit in my pocket.
