Goddamn, this is exactly what happened when broadband first reached my village. We didn't have our own telephone exchange, instead sharing one with another village accross the valley, so when we finally got 'broadband' it had to travel down a mile and a half of copper wire to get to us. This connection was shared between about 1,500 households, making it painfully slow, especially at peak times. Thankfully we've got fibre optic now, but I still have nightmares about porn videos stopping to buffer mid fap.
