A nicely crafted world/aesthetic that is unfortunately ruined by linearity with d-list anime characters and Japanese dad jokes. Whenever you tell yourself you officially hit rock bottom with X, play a little of X-2 to remind yourself that you still haven't quite reached the last circle of hell yet.

You can backtrack all you want, but it will only show you how tiny the FFX world feels. You literally walk from the plains and canyons of the calm lands to the snowy peaks of Mt. Gagazet across a tiny bridge on a short footpath with one single screen transition.

You are correct though, it is still one of the best FF games despite that. Imagine how much better it would have been with an actual overworld.

The problem with Tidus is that his growth and development, while arguably so vague that I'd venture that they failed to adequately portrayed it, are just fucking pointless.

In 7 Cloud's struggles were about overcoming his shattered memory and learning the truth to be more than a sephiroth drone.

8 was about Squall dealing with abandonment issues in order to accept making new friends and claim his destiny as a leader.

While you can argue about the effectiveness of these plots the important part is that they actually mattered. Whereas Tidus hating his dad amounts to pretty much fucking nothing, and is practically a footnote denied any real closure by the end anyway.

Now X-2 has quite a lot more content, it has two new dresspheres, a dungeon crawler and a monster leveling system like XIII-2 had.

I would have personally liked it a lot more if you could completely turn off the dress-change cutscenes. Sure you can shorten them but it's not the same as just switching them off. The closure is that Tidus realizes somewhere along the way that he's really no different from his father, and let's go of his anger towards him.
After finding out Sin is Jecht, Tidus' pretty much makes it his goal to save his father.
That's not "pretty much fucking nothing", and if you honestly believe that, you either haven't played the game, or probably played on your phone while playing it.

Among other things full percentage requires multiple playthroughs down each story branch AND demands that you read every single individual line of npc text EVERYWHERE in the ENTIRE FUCKING WORLD. A single meaningless extra line missed and bam. 99% bitch.

And then there's oversouling one off enemies which is just a whole new kettle of insane torture. You can scarcely breathe on this game without a guidebook without fucking up hours upon hours of progress.

If you're serious then no, X isnt open world, its basically hub to corridor to hub to corridor, fairly linear progression until like 90% through the game then you get an airship and can go anywhere you've been before (and other places) and do all sorts of other shit. There is no world map sadly.

Its a good game, fun - the linearity makes a bit of sense when tied to the narrative. Also, linearity isnt necessarily a bad thing now and then, they tell a decent enough story with it desu.

Some people adore X as their all time favourite, most just think its mid to high tier. If you care about graphics then buy the remaster on steam if you can - you get a lot of value for money and will likely have fun. If you dont care about graphics you may have more fun with an older FF title, namely anything from snes or ps1.

I also don't particularly hate Tidus after he finds out the truth about Yuna's pilgrimage.

The absolute first thing you do in every single match of Blitzball is change the controls to manual.
Then catch the ball in the first half, and pass it around your players in your half of the court. Do this for the entirety of the first half, mostly favoring Tidus so he levels up so he can use techs.
Assign your strongest shot skill to Tidus, and get the ball as soon as possible in the second half.
Pass to your fastest swimmer (though he's probably Tidus, IIRC) and bait all the enemy players to chase you.
You should be fast enough to eventually leave them way behind you so they don't interrupt your shot, this is when you go next to the enemy goal and use your strongest shot.
After getting that one goal, get the ball back and repeat what you did in the first half, playing for time.

anon... not to be rude... but you need to gain some experience with tidus before you are able to equip the jecht shot ... basically you cant even equip the jecht shot until the second half and then you only get 2 or 3 minutes with Tidus to score in the second half. Last time I played FFX I ended up scoring with wakka to win the tournament. score for that tournament is usually 1 to 0 in my experiences though.

OK. So, one thing I find neat about FFX HD/international is that you can revisit each chamber of fayth after getting the airship. Doing so treats the player to a cutscene with each fayth, yuna and tidus in the same chamber. I am sure this is known but I never read anything about it and didn't not discover it until I was messing around with with the PS4 version. You get a chest in each chamber that is a sphere that adds a stat node to the sphere. Granted, this is just a drop in the bucket if you plan to stat max at the monster arena.

Probably the most solid FF if you're new to the series. Not too retro, pretty good worldbuilding unlike the newer FFs, character-driven with drama and romance for normies, high production values with graphics that still stand up, and simple but varied enough to maintain interest.
