I wouldnt because this is where FF took a big left turn. 12 also came about and changed things too but I wouldn't start there.
Best bet would be 5 me thinks. You get a raw idea of classes and magic and leveling and how generally all ff stories go. Then go 4 for more difficulty and more character class story focus. Or go 6 or 9. Then move to 7 or 8 because this was a big change in the franchise too but not so much as X was.
If you want to watch nothing but cut scenes, little to no challenge, then go 13.

It's a good system, but they never really take it anywhere. During the main game, most fights are either 3 monsters you kill with one hit, or one big guy that you beat on. There's a couple interesting bosses, but it's mostly too easy. And then all the post game shit is just grinding Wakka and abusing his attack reels.

And yeah, the story is dumb. I look back on it fondly because I played through it so many times, I can recite all the cutscenes, but it's all very clumsily written.

Plus, Blitzball was designed by Satan.

Yes, they did. About the same amount people bitched about FF13s linearity. 10 and 13 was basically history repeating itself. They both had sequels that were very open to try and address all the complaints.
