This is actually the message of the story. I don't know the plot but I discussed it with some employees I've talked to (who obviously didn't tell me details) and I told them what I thought the game would be about and they just smiled and said "You're pretty close". I see it a message on how humanity is willing to kill their child's future by destroying the planet for the present benefits.
Which is why there is animal death and oil symbolism and all that jazz. In this case, it's the same idea but more literal. Draining their children to survive for longer. The 'Death Stranding' is not just literal (being left to die) but also metaphorical about coming to terms with death. That you cannot run from it forever, that we all die alone. You will be stranded with death and only one of you is going to 'survive'.
